Robert Half is in search for a Controller. The Controller will report to the Chief Financial Officer. The Controller will oversee all compliance and post award management for government (federal and state) contracts and private grants. S/he must be able to adapt to a continually evolving environment and thrive in an autonomous and deadline-oriented workplace while managing an accounting department of eight staff.

Responsibilities

· Oversee all financial activities, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, and general ledger functions.

· Create an organizational structure within the accounting department to facilitate the achievement of the department’s short-term goals and long-term objectives.

· Manage and mentor junior personnel in the accounting department.

· Supervise accounting transaction-processing operations.

· Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports, including profit and loss statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements.

· Analyze financial data and trends to provide key insights and recommendations for improving financial performance.

· Develop and implement financial controls and procedures to ensure compliance with all financial regulations and best practices.

· Manage the budgeting and forecasting process, working closely with department heads to develop accurate and realistic financial plans.

· Maintain an adequate system of budgets and controls created to mitigate risk.

· Account for any budget variances and report significant discrepancies to management.

· Ensure timely and accurate completion of all financial transactions and reporting, including payroll processing and tax filings.

· Maintain a system of pre and post grant award management.

· Maintain financial records for each program, grant and project so that funder reports and requirements are met.

· Follow cost allocation principles and maintain current and accurate allocation methodology.

· Ensure that accurate and timely invoices are prepared in accordance with contract agreements with funders.

· Provide accurate and timely reporting on the financial activity of individual programs to program managers.

· Maintain an organized and orderly filing system for all accounting documents.

· Collaborate with external auditors to ensure smooth and successful audits.

· Coordinate with colleagues to prepare the company’s annual report.

· Maintain a comprehensive system of accounting records.

· Publish complete and timely financial statements to company executives, shareholders, and the board.

· Recommend benchmarks for the measurement of company financial performance goals.

· Analyze capital investments, contract negotiations, and pricing decisions.

· Comply with all local, state, and federal tax filings and reporting requirements.

· Complete periodic bank reconciliations.

· Maintain a system of controls over all accounting transactions.

· Other responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

Qualifications

· Bachelor’s Degree Accounting, Commerce, or Business Management/Administration; Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant a plus.

· 10+ years of progressive financial responsibility in similar sized organizations.

· 5+ years of experience in nonprofit and Real Estate finance, including affordable housing financing, tax credit, HUD and tax exempt bond structures desired.

· Successful demonstration of system implementation and use of multiple system platforms.

· Experience with small and large scale project management.

· Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles.

· Experience with Payroll and Accounting systems.

· Knowledge of federal and state legislation affecting nonprofits. Head Start experience a plus.
