UNICEF generates evidence on the situation of children by supporting the collection, analysis, visualization and use of robust data and statistics to improve programming on health, nutrition, education, child protection, water, sanitation and hygiene, social policy, social protection, as well as cross-cutting areas of gender, climate change, disability, adolescent participation, early childhood development and migration. 

Under the overall guidance of the supervisor, the Data and Analytics interns will be assigned to support programme sections and cross-cutting areas with data collection, analysis and visualization.   The specific learning and developmental assignments will revolve around developing digital data collection tools, collecting, cleaning, processing and analyzing as well as visualizing data.  In addition, the data interns will also learn via analysis and synthesis of field monitoring reports and desk review of research articles to produce actionable insights for decision making. 

The objectives of this internship are:

  • The primary purpose of the internship programme will be to support the development and enhancement of the interns’ professional experience through practical work assignments, to expose the interns to UNICEF’s mission, as well as well as to promote learning on child rights, in general.

The data and analytics internship will have the following specific objectives:

  • To develop their data management skills by being involved in developing digital data collection tools, collecting, cleaning, processing and analyzing data.
  • To learn by doing through developing dashboards, visualizations, mapping, and information management products for use by programme sections.
  • To learn more about UNICEF programmes by participating in field monitoring visits and analyzing field visit reports to produce actionable insights for decision making.
  • To learn new developments in the application of big data and analytics to advance child rights and promote equity.
  • To participate in capacity building and training activities (online and offline) related to complex data analysis using statistical software packages (NVivo, SPSS, Stata, Excel, Epi Info, etc).
  • To learn by practically performing data quality assurance and quality control on all data used in reports, results frameworks and monitoring and evaluation plans.
  • The Data and Analytics interns will directly report to the Planning and Monitoring Specialist. The interns will also update the Planning and Monitoring Specialist and Chief of PPM on progress of learning and development work assignments during regular meetings.
  • Together with the supervisor, a monthly work plan will be developed, which will indicate key activities, deliverables, and performance indicators, clearly specifying deadlines. The internship is expected to be on full-time basis. The interns will be required to submit monthly reports to the supervisor which will also be shared with respective sections to which they are assigned. The monthly report will summarize the learning objectives achieved in conformity with the internship work assignments.
  • Supervision and guidance will be provided on a day-to-day basis, and regular meetings will be organized to discuss progress and challenges. The intern will be exposed to learning and personal development opportunities within UNICEF and with the partners, including humanitarian response, and will be exposed to learn new developments in the application of big data and analytics to advance child rights and promote equity.

Specific tasks are highlighted below:

  • Develop digital data collection tools, and conduct data collection, data cleaning, data processing and analysis as requested.
  • Develop dashboards, factsheets, visualizations, mapping and information and knowledge management products for use by programme sections.
  • Participate in field monitoring visits and analyze field visit reports to produce actionable insights for decision making.
  • Participate in capacity building and training activities (online and offline) related to complex data analysis using statistical software packages.
  • Conduct data quality assurance and quality control on all data used in reports, results frameworks and monitoring and evaluation plans.
  • Participate in PMR and relevant programme section meetings.
  • Contribute to other planning, monitoring, reporting and research functions when assigned by the chief of section.
  • Participate in a cross-functional capstone project to promote UNICEF operational or programmatic activities.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have… 

  • A completed degree and graduated in the last 2 years in the field of statistics, data management, computer science, development studies, or any other related area is required.
  • Good verbal communication, research, and writing skills in English. Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset
  • Good knowledge and proficiency of Microsoft tools (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse people.
  • Culturally sensitive and a good understanding of the local context in rural areas.
  • Ability to adapt and remain flexible.
  • Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency is considered an asset.
