Position description

The Department of Political Science in the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in International Organizations and Norms to start in August 2025. This is a standard nine-month faculty appointment.

We are particularly interested in candidates whose research and teaching interests lie in international organization and global governance institutions as they intersect with topics such as the design, development and performance of international governmental organizations (IGOs) and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Specialization in issues related to global health, environment, transnational networks, migration, ethnicity/nationalism, or human rights are strongly preferred. The individual will be expected to work with our college’s Global and International Studies program. The expected teaching load will be two courses a semester.

This tenure-track Assistant Professor position entails conducting research leading to publication, engaging in creative and/or scholarly activities, designing graduate and undergraduate courses, developing and implementing new methods of teaching to reflect changes in the field, providing curriculum material, constructing syllabi, leading classroom instruction, writing and administering exams, mentoring and evaluating students, creating interest and understanding among students, serving on various faculty- and student-oriented committees, providing service on campus an in related professional organizations, and participating in faculty governance in the department and on campus.

Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.

Political science is the traditional undergraduate major of choice for students seeking careers in public affairs, law, or academia. It carries out J. Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

With submitted materials, the candidate must demonstrate

  • A Ph.D. degree in Political Science or International Relations with a specialization in international organization, or a related field, from an accredited institution of higher education conferred by the start of appointment
  • A demonstrated ability to teach an undergraduate Introduction to International Relations course
  • Record of successful research and publication (e.g., journal articles published in reputable outlets)
  • A well-defined research agenda that focuses on international governmental organizations (IGOs) and non-governmental organizations (NGOs)
  • Evidence of effective teaching (e.g., teaching evaluations, sample syllabi, teaching portfolio)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching
  • A strong and active research agenda that is well-grounded in theory and backed by advanced analytical, methodological, and empirical skills
  • A demonstrated potential for publishing in top-tier outlets
  • A demonstrated commitment to graduate and undergraduate education and a willingness to contribute to our department’s existing teaching strengths
  • Specialization in issues related to global health, environment, transnational networks, migration, ethnicity/nationalism, or human rights
  • A demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a student population from different backgrounds
  • Potential to secure external grant funding
  • A demonstrated commitment to active scholarly service
