UNICEF is supporting the MOE to improve children’s learning through various programs in Syrian Refugee camps and host community.  This includes the Schools Teaching for Learning Recovery (ST4LR) in 49 pilot schools across Jordan, with a possibility to expand in additional schools after the piloting is completed.

To facilitate communication among the various contributing staff, partners, stakeholders, the MOE, and schools in the implementation of the ST4LR program, there is a crucial need for subject specialist translators and interpreters. Additionally, since the programs are in the design phase, there is a constant need for material translation from Arabic to English, and English to Arabic, as well as meeting interpretation.  

Beyond the ST4LR program, the Section has numerous other translation requirements, related to a range of programs, research studies and events.

The Purpose of the assignment is to support UNICEF’s Jordan Education Section in the rapid and high-quality technical translation of education-related documents, as well as verbal translation when required.

How can you make a difference? 

The overall objective is to set up a Long-Term Agreement to facilitate and expedite the process by which UNICEF in Jordan will hire specialist translators as required for specific projects to work on a range of documents and training material where translation is required such as brochures, videos, PowerPoint, Word, and Excel documents.

The specialist translators will be able to provide oral interpretation with a large range of stakeholders in government and working with international consultants and educationalists in the field. They will also be able to support interpretation in online meetings, instant interpretation, through the use of chat boxes etc. The specialist translators will also work closely with the UNICEF team to translate training and curriculum materials.

The specialist translators will mostly work on a day-to-day basis with the workload managed by the Education Officer; however, they will also work closely together to ensure that they can meet section priorities.

Deliverables: 

1.  Translation of documents Arabic to English and English to Arabic: 

Well-translated and edited content for website, media, advocacy, training, and workshops including but not limited to assessments, reports, studies, curriculums, lesson plans, content frameworks, work plans. Documents can be in the form of Microsoft files, Dashboards, Videos, and other.

2.  Instant translation and interpretation:

Interpretation and instant interpretation from Arabic to English and English to Arabic during workshops, trainings, meeting, visits.

 

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have… 

Category 1: Translation of documents Arabic to English and English to Arabic

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in English language, English literature, Communications, Journalism is mandatory.
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience in the following fields: Translation studies, Linguistics, English Language and Literature.
  • Fluency in written and oral Arabic and English in required.
  • Experience in instant interpretation from Arabic to English and English to Arabic.
  • Experience in translating educational material for the Government and/or UN Organizations is desirable.
  • Experience in using Microsoft Office i.e., Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, Teams.
  • Experience and quality of work demonstrably meet the highest international standards.
  • Ability to analyze, plan, communicate effectively orally and in writing draft reports.

Category 2: Instant translation and interpretation  

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in English language, English literature, Communications, Journalism is mandatory.
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience in the following fields: Translation studies, Linguistics, English Language and Literature.
  • Fluency in written and oral Arabic and English in required.
  • Experience in instant interpretation from Arabic to English and English to Arabic.
  • Experience in translating educational material for the Government and/or UN Organizations is desirable.
  • Experience in using Microsoft Office i.e., Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, Teams.
  • Experience and quality of work demonstrably meet the highest international standards.
  • Ability to analyze, plan, communicate effectively orally and in writing draft reports.

Language:

• Fluency in oral and written English is required

• Fluency in oral and written Arabic is required

Note: Candidates should have experience in both categories for them to be able to apply for this LTA.

UNICEF will award LTA to top ranked [4] under each category. However, only the top 2 candidates will be considered for the services with the other two documented as back-up to be considered on a need’s basis. A candidate may be awarded LTA for one or more than one category.

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures, and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws. 

The selected candidate is solely responsible to ensure that the visa (applicable) and health insurance required to perform the duties of the contract are valid for the entire period of the contract. Selected candidates are subject to confirmation of fully-vaccinated status against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) with a World Health Organization (WHO)-endorsed vaccine, which must be met prior to taking up the assignment. It does not apply to consultants who will work remotely and are not expected to work on or visit UNICEF premises, programme delivery locations or directly interact with communities UNICEF works with, nor to travel to perform functions for UNICEF for the duration of their consultancy contracts.
