Who are we looking for?
A dynamic communications leader with a gift for developing communications strategies, fundraising, and a passion for network-building. The Manager of Communications and Development will advance the sector’s advocacy efforts and ONN’s network engagement by leading content development, digital engagement, partner relations, supporting events, and membership services. The successful candidate will creatively and efficiently manage ONN’s communications and marketing strategies to activate, support, and leverage the network to champion policy issues of importance to Ontario’s nonprofit sector.
The Manager of Communications and Development will collaborate on the creation of communications tools, resources, and events to help mobilize nonprofits, promote the value and impact of the sector, and champion the nonprofit sector’s value and influence to strengthen its social and economic impact. The Manager will also lead the financial partnerships and sponsorship strategy to effectively manage and grow revenue.
The ideal candidate will enjoy working with a small team in a fast-paced environment that prioritizes decent work, collaborating with and learning from sector leaders, and running impactful policy and advocacy campaigns.
What will the Manager of Communications and Development do?
Reporting to the Director of Strategic Communications and Initiatives and working with ONN staff, network, and members, the Manager of Communications and Development will:
- Develop, implement, and monitor communications and marketing strategies.
- Lead data collection for evaluation of the communications and marketing strategies such as evaluating ONN’s content, engagement, and reach.
- Lead content development and management of the ONN main website and e-blasts, e-bulletins, and social media channels.
- Oversee design and editorial support for the ONN team, including reports, policy briefs, submissions, and presentations, working with contractors/vendors, as necessary.
- Lead and implement new technologies that support ONN communications (internal and external) e.g. webinars, online platforms, etc.
- Support the Director of Strategic Communications and Initiatives with media relations and tracking of coverage.
- Lead marketing and promotional communications for ONN events, including annual conference, webinars and regional events, and other ONN events, as needed.
- Coordinate monthly (or regularly scheduled) webinars, including determining topics and speakers with ONN team members and lead webinar production team.
- Lead the annual conference sponsorship program to achieve financial targets and manage sponsorship deliverables, with support from the Director of Strategic Communications and Initiatives.
- Lead the annual financial partnerships program to achieve financial targets and manage communications deliverables, with support from the Director of Strategic Communications and Initiatives.
- Supervise ONN’s Communications Coordinator who is tasked with supporting the implementation of the communications and marketing strategies, events, and financial partnerships and sponsorships.
- Manage platform analytics and assess efficiencies of the use of technology platforms to continuously improve ONN’s digital strategy (including Matomo, Mailchimp, Hootsuite).
- Act as communications team lead for digital strategy and implement relevant activities in the strategy.
- Oversee data hygiene related to the syncing of platforms including Salesforce, Eventbrite and Mailchimp.
- Participate in organization-wide priorities (e.g., strategic framework implementation, organizational anti-racism strategy).
- Participate as an integral member of the ONN team.
- Other duties as assigned (i.e. support for policy files).
Required qualifications:
- Experience working in Communications (minimum five years) and in fundraising (minimum two years).
- Work experience in the nonprofit sector (four years minimum).
- Experience supervising staff and volunteers (three years minimum).
- Excellent written and oral English communication skills.
- Demonstrated experience managing social media platforms and engagement methods.
- Experience using design software or tools (e.g. Canva).
- Experience in website management and communications technology.
- Project management experience and ability to complete complex assignments with tight deadlines.
- Commitment to anti-racism/anti-oppression, equity, and empowerment of historically underserved groups.
- A team player who exhibits and embraces the values of ONN.
Preferred experience
- Familiarity with network-based advocacy approaches (see ONN’s Networks in Action Guide).
- Training and/or experience in Indigenous cultural safety and anti-racism and anti-oppression initiatives.
- Familiarity with Salesforce or other relationship management software.
Job specifications
- 37.5 hours/week, three weeks of holidays.
- Office based in Toronto (Yonge/St.Clair). This position is eligible for work-from-home arrangements with a requirement of minimum one day in office per week.
