JOB DESCRIPTION

ABOUT THE COMPANY:

The European Council for Nuclear Research (CERN) is a premier research institution specializing in particle physics, where groundbreaking experiments probe the fundamental nature of matter and the universe. CERN’s innovative experiments, including the Large Hadron Collider, push the boundaries of scientific knowledge and technological development. By fostering international collaboration, CERN serves as a global hub for advancing fundamental science and exploring the universe’s deepest mysteries.

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe.

Using the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter – fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description

Introduction

Are you willing to have a key contribution to the production of complex and precise experimental setups for one of the leading experimental facilities at CERN?

Join CERN’s Sources, Targets and Interactions Group (STI) and become a member of the team in charge of the production of different systems for the ISOLDE facility at CERN.

ISOLDE is an internationally leading facility dedicated to the production of radioactive ion beams for research across a wide range of disciplines including nuclear physics, atomic and molecular physics, condensed-matter physics and material science, life science and medical applications.

You will join the Accelerator Systems Department (SY), which is responsible for the beam-related technical systems of the CERN accelerators.

The SY teams design, build and operate equipment systems in all CERN accelerators, and are engaged in ambitious forward-looking R&D programmes.

The Sources, Targets and Interactions Group (STI) has a broad expertise on the interaction of beams with matter and applies its know-how to a large spectrum of activities including particle production, beam intercepting devices, studies on beam-matter interaction and nuclear engineering.

You will join the Radioactive Beam Sources Section (RBS), responsible for the fabrication of the Target and Ion Source Units and other systems, dedicated to the production of radioactive ion beams required for the physics programme of ISOLDE.

Functions

You will:

  • Schedule the maintenance and repair of machines and equipment in the ISOLDE mechanical workshop, ensuring compliance with applicable safety regulations.

Manage stock levels of materials, tools, parts, and consumables to ensure availability;

  • Manufacture, on conventional machines (mills, lathes, drill press, grinders) prototypes and small series of mechanical parts, made of metal, plastic and composite materials for experimental setups;
  • Design, manufacture and assemble highly specialized mechanical components based on drawings, sketches or oral instructions;
  • Engage with researchers, students and staffs to help them understand the manufacturing design constraints, including materials selection and manufacturing processes;
  • Serve as link person between researchers and CERN technical teams for the installation and operation of experimental setups in CERN technical infrastructure;
  • Support to ISOLDE users for handling equipment and mounting systems in the ISOLDE experimental hall;
  • Coordinate the use of temporary storage within the experimental hall and other ISOLDE premises;
  • Produce documentation and drawings for the manufacture, assembly, installation and use of systems.

Qualifications

Higher technical diploma or equivalent relevant experience in the field of mechanics, machining or a related field.

Experience:

  • Proven experience in precision mechanics;
  • Demonstrated experience in the field of mechanical assembly and fitting; machining of metallic components (traditional, non-CNC milling and turning);
  • Experience in producing technical drawings using standard CAD tools;
  • Knowledge of vacuum systems, material science and elementary science would be an added advantage;
  • Knowledge of electronics, control systems or cooling systems would be an advantage.

Technical competencies:

  • Knowledge and application of manufacturing methods and work preparation;
  • Manufacturing of mechanical parts: using traditional, non-CNC milling and turning;
  • Assembly of mechanical structures and equipment;
  • Knowledge and application of additive-manufacturing techniques.

Behavioural competencies:

  • Managing self: working well autonomously; taking on activities and tasks without prompting.
  • Achieving results: delivering high quality work on time and fulfilling expectations; taking appropriate corrective actions and adapting work / project plans if necessary.
  • Working in teams: building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships; seeking to help other team members when own work is done; supporting others.
  • Communicating effectively: ensuring that information, procedures and decisions are appropriately documented; providing others with timely information.
  • Demonstrating flexibility: adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements; readily accepting new tasks or work/projects.

Language skills:

Spoken and written English or French: ability to understand and speak the other language in routine situations.

Willingness to acquire knowledge of the other language rapidly.
