Job Description

We’re seeking a Front-End Engineer with expertise in data visualization to join our product team. In this role, you’ll shape the user experience of our online data services, collaborating closely with our Product Manager and UX/UI designers to implement new features and enhance our platform’s interface. Your focus will be on creating engaging, interactive data visualizations and dynamic data services that empower our users to make informed decisions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of data-driven user interfaces and interactive visualizations
  • Architect and implement complex, responsive front-end solutions using modern web technologies
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and build user-centric features
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to our contractor development team
  • Optimize front-end performance and ensure cross-browser compatibility
  • Conduct code reviews and maintain high code quality standards
  • Stay abreast of emerging front-end and data visualization technologies

Required Qualifications

  • 3+ years of professional front-end development experience
  • Expert-level proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and TypeScript
  • Strong experience with React and state management libraries (e.g., Redux, MobX)
  • Proven expertise with data visualization libraries such as D3.js, Chart.js, or Plotly.js
  • Experience building complex, data-intensive web applications
  • Proficiency in responsive web design and mobile-first approaches
  • Familiarity with RESTful APIs and modern build tools (e.g., Webpack, Vite)
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Strong communication skills in English (both written and spoken)
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a remote environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with other front-end frameworks (e.g., Angular, Vue.js)
  • Knowledge of server-side rendering and static site generation
  • Familiarity with WebGL or Canvas for advanced visualizations
  • Experience with real-time data visualization and streaming data
  • Understanding of data analysis concepts and statistical methods
  • Exposure to Python, Django, or other back-end technologies
  • Experience with unit testing and integration testing for front-end applications
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms, particularly AWS
  • Knowledge of UX/UI design principles and user centered design
  • Experience working in the humanitarian or non-profit sector

Contract Duration: Initially 6 months with the potential for extension**.**

Level of Effort (LOE): 100%; Full-time

Monthly remuneration: USD 4,000 monthly

Start Date: Late Summer/Early Fall

Data Friendly Space (DFS) is a 501(c)(3) global non-profit organization with guiding principle to improve information management and analysis capacity, tools, and processes in the humanitarian and development community to enable better informed and more targeted assistance.

DFS staff is composed of experts from the humanitarian information management and analysis field who specialize in real-time secondary data review and build humanitarian applications that support the fast extraction of information from large volumes of unstructured data.

DFS also focuses on the creation of data-centric web applications, websites, and mobile applications to support humanitarian organizations. When building software, DFS focuses on the intersection between data automation processes powered by Artificial intelligence and human knowledge and skills, in particular when one can help the other to execute the analysis.
