Purpose of the assignment:

Introduction: Najahna is a 5-year project (2022 – 2026) funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation (NNF) with a mission to promote youth economic empowerment in Jordan. The project’s primary goal is to empower 48,000 Syrian refugees and conflict-affected youth in Jordan, aged 15 to 25, to become economically and socially viable actors in an inclusive, healthy, protective, and gender-responsive environment. The project is implemented by five consortiums, Plan International (PI), The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), The Royale Health Awareness Society (RHAS), Includovate, and The Danish Industry (DI) and lead by Plan International.

About the activity: The Mobile Journalists (MoJo) pilot activity is a pivotal initiative under the Najahna program, seeks to empower up to 20 youth participants with Mobile Journalism tools and skills. After empowering the youth with those skills, we plan to leverage them by having participants promote Najahna activities through mobile journalism techniques and create compelling content for dissemination via the Najahna website and our partners’ social media channels. We want to empower youth to tell their own stories and a confident and appealing way and through this create opportunities for employment and exposure – and to inspire their peers.

Main Objective: Empower youth aged 18-25 with mobile journalism skills to create and share compelling content for Najahna’s initiatives.

Objectives:

  1. Equip youth with mobile journalism skills.

  3. Develop a network of skilled young journalists.
  4. Encourage youth-led content creation addressing Najahna’s mission.

Target Participants: The program is designed for youth aged 18-25 with a passion for storytelling, an interest in journalism, and access to mobile devices. No prior journalism experience is required.

ACCOUNTABILITIEs

Under direct supervision of Najahna program, and with support from Plan communication technical teams, the consultant / company will work on:

  • Ensure the development and publication of high-quality multimedia content (articles, videos, infographics) created by the youth participants.
  • Ensure all content aligns with the Program’s objectives.
  • Post the training, provide ongoing mentorship to participants (minimum for one month), helping them refine their journalism skills and storytelling techniques.
  • Set up feedback sessions to review participants’ work and provide constructive criticism.
  • Provide an internship opportunity for participants who show commitment and interest post the training.
  • Assist participants in understanding technical issues related to mobile journalism tools and apps and how to overcome technology challenges with the available resources.
  • Stay updated on the latest mobile journalism technologies and recommend tools that enhance content quality and productivity.
  • Create a landing page for participants to upload their work and utilize a unified platform for the stories created.
  • Coordinate with Najahna consortium to integrate participants’ content into their communication channels.
  • Facilitate joint content creation projects between participants and utilize the MoJo service provider social media platforms.
  • Develop a framework for continuous monitoring and evaluation of participants’ progress and content impact.
  • Organize advanced workshops on specific topics like investigative journalism, multimedia storytelling, and data journalism.
  • Invite guest speakers and experts to conduct sessions and share industry insights.
  • Encourage participants to engage with their communities, gathering stories and perspectives that reflect local issues and solutions.
  • Promote participant-led initiatives that foster community involvement and social change.
  • Conduct sessions on the importance of ethical journalism, including issues like bias, misinformation, and responsible reporting.
  • Develop guidelines for ethical content creation.
  • Provide resources and support for participants to pursue journalism careers, including portfolio development, networking opportunities, and job placements.
  • Facilitate connections with media outlets and potential employers for internships and employment opportunities.
  • Prepare detailed reports on training outcomes, participant progress, and overall project impact.

Document success stories and best practices to share with stakeholders and use in future training programs.

Approach

The consultant / company will be responsible for the MoJo in-person capacity building and other activities mentioned above for up to 20 participants.

Technical expertise, skills and knowledge

  1. Journalism Experience: minimum 5 years
  2. Mobile Technology Proficiency: minimum 5 years
  3. Educational Background (for consultants or companies’ teams): A degree in journalism, communications, media studies, or a related field is desirable.
  4. Understanding of ethical standards and media literacy in the context of Jordan:
  5. Extensive Knowledge of Jordanian cyber-crimes and laws
  6. For the companies (registration Certificate) is mandatory.

ethical and child protection considerations

The consultant is required to provide a statement on the respect and protection of child rights, human rights and dignity of participants compliant with Plan’s Child Protection Policy and Gender Equality & Inclusion Policy. The consultant shall read and sign Plan’s code of conduct as fully understood and in agreement to in all respects and shall follow this in all and every aspect during the term of this employment.

Proposal requirements

The consultant will submit both a technical and a financial proposal (of not more than 10 pages) that include the following:

Financial proposal: 30%

  • An itemized and detailed budget, indicating the unit costs for consultancy fees as well as, separately, administrative and support costs such as stationery. Please note that Plan will not provide transport and accommodation to the consultant or research assistants during the consultancy period.
  • The evaluation will be based on the total price provided in the offer for the whole consultancy period. 30%
  • All costs must be expressed in Jordanian Dinar and Tax Inclusive.
