About the board

Are you looking to make a meaningful contribution to your community and put your skills, networks, and knowledge of local issues to good use? If so, consider joining an Adult, Community and Further Education Regional Council.

Adult community education plays an essential role within the education system. It engages adult learners who are seeking to attain the core skills they need for work, further study, or to enable them to participate fully as members of the community.

Members of the Regional Councils support the Adult, Community and Further Education (ACFE) board to achieve its objectives and functions under the Education and Training Reform Act 2006.

Regional Council Members Expressions of Interest are sought for several vacant positions on the eight Regional Councils of ACFE:

  • Barwon South Western
  • Gippsland
  • Grampians
  • Eastern Metropolitan
  • Hume
  • North Western Metropolitan
  • Southern Metropolitan

About the role

The primary role of Regional Councils is to act as an expert advisor to ACFE Board providing strategic advice on issues affecting learners engaged in adult, community and further education programs in the areas listed above. This advice leads to supporting, promoting, and advocating for services within regions that meet local community needs and support adult Victorians who need to build their educational capacity and who are seeking to develop the core skills they need to fully participate in further study, work and life.

Positions will commence late-2024 and members are appointed for up to three years.

Membership is voluntary. Councils currently meet at a minimum of four times a year and each Council determines its own meeting schedule.

Who we’re looking for

We are looking for people who represent and/or understand:

  • The interests and views of individuals and groups who benefit from or use adult community education (Language, Literacy, Numeracy, Digital skills)
  • The importance of promoting and advocating for the sector
  • The diversity of communities in Victoria
  • Issues affecting industry in the region
  • Issues facing local communities

Expressions of interest are encouraged from:

  • People with an interest in skills development, those with an understanding of regional and rural Victoria, industry and business, community services organisations, youth agencies and local government.
  • All members of the community. Women, Indigenous people, young people, people with a disability, people of diverse gender and sexuality, and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.

Being part of a Regional Council is a great way to make a positive impact on adult community education in your local area. Adult community education changes people’s lives by developing confidence and aspiration. It develops skills for life and opens the way to greater social engagement, breaks cycles of disadvantage, and is a crucial step towards further training, meaningful employment, and social participation. By joining a Regional Council, you will play a pivotal role in providing the ACFE board with local perspectives about the views and needs of learners in your area.

You will also have the chance to expand your professional networks. A yearly professional development day will afford you the opportunity to network with other Regional Councils from across the Victorian network, Board members and the Department of Jobs, Skills, Industry and Regions.
