The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with NPS at the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area & Rainbow Bridge National Monument in Page, Arizona, is recruiting for 2 Interpretation and Education internships, under the direction of the Assistant Program Manager for Interpretation, Education and Partnerships. The selected candidates will connect youth to their National Parks through training and work experience in Interpretation and Education, visitor services, conservation programs, and engagement with the natural and cultural resources within Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. The  interns’ role will be crucial in educating the public about native ecosystems, cultural resources and promoting stewardship of these resources.

Interns may work full-time or part-time, and their work may be intermittent around a school schedule.  They will work between the summers of 2024 and 2025. 

Duties Include:

After a thorough orientation to park operations and facilities, and receiving foundational Interpretation training, the Education and Interpretation intern will then progress to staffing the visitor center desk, greeting and orienting visitors, and providing informal interpretation. Interns will build subject matter knowledge about the park resources through research, develop and present interpretive programs to the visiting public (guided walks, tours, demonstrations, etc.).  They will also work under the guidance of park rangers to assist with presenting environmental education programs in the park and local classrooms.  The interns will assist park staff with outreach events in local communities as opportunities arise for these events.  The interns will perform occasional roving trail patrols to provide visitor service and informal interpretation.  After the interns have mastered these tasks, they will work on assigned projects that relate to their interests, projects that support the needs of the park, and projects that benefit the public.

Contract Timeline:

We are offering a 6 month position ( 960 hours) at 40 hrs/week and a 3 month position (480 hours) at 40 hrs/ week beginning in September. **Interns may work full-time or part-time, and their work may be intermittent around a school schedule.  

Compensation and Benefits: 

  • Wage Range: $17-19/hr (depending on term length and experience)

(Because the agreement under which this position is being advertised is a Public Lands Corps Youth Assistance Agreement, all applicants must be between the ages of 17 and 30 years old at time of application.)

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  •  Must possess a clean, valid,  driver’s license 
  • Must be able available to work at least 2 months at 40 hours per week; preferred 3 months at 40 hours per week 
  • Must pass department of interior background investigation
  • Must have a passion for preserving and protecting public lands
  • Flexible work schedule and someone willing to work weekends and holidays
  • Knowledge and understanding of natural/cultural resources and history of the area.
  • General knowledge and understanding of NPS missions and goals.
  • Must be comfortable with public speaking in order to effectively express ideas and concepts to a wide range of audiences.
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy in dealing with the general public to avoid conflict and resolve problems.
  • Ability to demonstrate enthusiasm, sincerity, and an attitude of friendliness in dealing with the public.
  • Participants must meet the Public Land Corp (PLC) requirements.
