Operations Administrator, The Public Interest Network

Oakland, California; Chicago, Illinois; or Denver, Colorado

Use your attention to detail and organization skills to make change. The Operations Administrator for The Public Interest Network supports our state advocacy in 30 states for two of our organizations, Environment America and PIRG, working to advance environmental protections, consumer rights, and other solutions to problems that arise from America’s single-minded pursuit of endless economic growth. For example: We’re still burning fossil fuels even though it’s changing the climate. We keep giving antibiotics to healthy livestock, even though it leads to “superbugs” that are antibiotic-resistant. We use plastic products for a few minutes only to throw them away so they pollute the oceans for centuries.

Working closely with our staff across the country, the administrator plays a critical role in the day to day logistics, coordination, and optimization for effective organizations.

Key responsibilities

  • Work with and support our team of state-based advocacy staff.
  • Manage team data and systems.
  • Coordinate with other Public Interest Network departments, from our communications department to our fundraising teams, to maximize the impact of our work.
  • Identify areas to innovate and improve efficiency, and help state offices implement those improvements.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • This position requires exercising discretion and independent judgment in making decisions in matters of significance.

Qualifications

Entry-level candidates with a passion for our issues, mission, and values and a strong desire to build a better world with their life are encouraged to apply. To be effective in this role, you need to be goal-driven, detail-oriented and highly organized, with the maturity to manage confidential and/or sensitive information.

A top candidate will have these qualities:

  • Driven by the missions of Environment America, PIRG, and The Public Interest Network.
  • Highly organized – Good at developing and/or learning systems for yourself, and helping others adopt those systems as needed.
  • Problem-solver – If something is going wrong, you’re ready to figure out not just how to solve it, but how to make sure it doesn’t happen again, whether it’s a database that’s crashed, or a reporting drill that not everyone uses.
  • Clear communicator – you’ll be the go-to person on our team for information. Figuring out how to communicate information out to people on our team, and to staff on other teams in our network, is a big part of this role.

Compensation and Benefits

The starting compensation range for this entry-level position is $33,825-$38,180 and depends on location. The Public Interest Network offers an excellent benefits package. We also offer an excellent training program and opportunities for advancement.

About The Public Interest Network

The Public Interest Network operates and supports organizations committed to a shared vision of a better world and a strategic approach to social change. Environment America, PIRG and Green Corps are among the network groups winning positive change for the environment and the public interest.

Our work focuses on the problems that arise from the single-minded pursuit of endless economic growth: climate change, the overuse of antibiotics on factory farms, proliferating plastic pollution, and on and on.

And our approach is unique: We focus on the big picture, but are relentlessly pragmatic and prioritize making a difference in people’s lives over making a statement. We work with everybody to make change happen, political ideology aside, championing good ideas wherever they come from. And we are serious about the work – we set clear goals, benchmarks and systems to measure our progress, and hold ourselves accountable to making change now and building for the future.

This unique approach gives even the newest staff an opportunity to make a concrete difference for the environment and the public interest — just as hundreds of dedicated staff have done over our 50 year history. If our vision and our pragmatic approach inspire you; if you have the passion and the drive that it takes; if you’re looking for a mission, not just a job — then let’s talk.
