NYS Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation

Division for Historic Preservation

The goal of the internship is to physically reorganize the archaeology collections storage area at the Division for Historic Preservation (DHP). The DHP located at Peebles Island State Park curates approximately 1.5 million artifacts from various NYS historic sites and parks. This collection is stored within approximately 3,000 artifact boxes.

Daily tasks will involve the physical reorganization of artifact collection boxes aided by the examination of existing artifact catalog data. Manual labor will involve lifting and moving artifact boxes (approximately 20lbs max). Existing boxes will be removed from their current location in storage, the artifact bags within will be placed in new boxes, and updated provenience information will be attached with new box labels to improve the management/retrieval of specific artifacts for exhibits and research. The reboxed artifacts will then be reshelved in the storage area and the storage map updated. Specific shelf locations will be recorded for each box and included in the updated artifact database.

Work will be conducted in the archaeology collections storage area at Peebles Island State Park. The work is scheduled for 20 hours per week per intern. Ideally both interns will work at the same time but is not necessary. Workdays are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday each week of the internship. Work will be managed by Andrew Farry (Conservator) and Michael Lenardi (Scientist/Archaeology).
