Position Title: School Settlement Worker (Farsi, Dari or Pashto speaking)
Start and End date: September 2024 – March 31, 2025
Hourly rate of pay: $27.27
Reports To: Manager, SWIS and Refugee Initiatives
Hours: Full-time (28hrs/week)
Location: Various schools and libraries/working remotely

Position Summary 

The School Settlement Worker will assist newcomer families and youth by providing them with appropriate information and referral services and one-time workshops, and facilitating the process of settling in their new schools and communities.

Main responsibilities:
Information and referral services

  • Meets clients in person/virtually one-on-one to assess their settlement needs
  • Provides needs-based information
  • Refers to appropriate community programs & resources and conducts follow-up with clients and agencies
  • Identifies needs for group information sessions (in person/virtually)
  • Identifies resource persons/speakers, manages outreach and logistics for the session
  • Organizes info-sessions in consultation with school counterparts

Outreach and networking

  • Collects newcomer list from school
  • Contacts parents in person or over phone/online platforms
  • Promotes services at school events and community spaces (in person/virtually)
  • Meets with key teachers to ensure appropriate referrals (in person/virtually)
  • Meets regularly with school stakeholders to strengthen partnership (in person/virtually)
  • Conducts research and identifies community resources
  • Develops working relationships and engages other community organizations/partners
  • Participates in NYCH and program meetings, trainings and events (in person/virtually)

Documentation and reporting

  • Updates and maintains the newcomer students, clients file and service information
  • Produces statistical and narrative reports on monthly basis
  • Presents periodical updated reports to school council and at staff meetings
  • Maintain and update bulletin board and resource binder

Other duties

  • Participates in NYCH events and initiatives (in person/virtually)
  • Supervises volunteers and placement students

Required Qualifications:

Education

  • The minimum level of education preferred is a degree/diploma in social sciences, community/settlement services or related fields.

Experience and Skills

  • Proven knowledge of the education and library systems and structures
  • Proven experience working with youth and good knowledge of youth issues and particularly newcomer youth issues an asset
  • Ability to develop and facilitate group sessions in a virtual format
  • Ability to engage and support clients one on one through various virtual platforms
  • Excellent time management, attention to detail, and ability to effectively manage multiple tasks
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in English
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in Farsi, Dari or Pashto is a must

Other Requirements:

  • Typically works regular hours from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with occasional evening/weekend work.  Responsible for caring for a laptop and cell phone.
  • Candidates will be asked to declare their vaccination status during recruitment process. Successful candidates will be required to provide proof before or directly upon the start of their employment.
  • A successful clearance of criminal record verification will be required when necessary for the position.
