Mission and objectives
The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is the UN organization that contributes to peace and development through volunteerism worldwide. Volunteerism is a powerful means of engaging people in tackling development challenges, and it can transform the pace and nature of development. Volunteerism benefits both society at large and the individual volunteer by strengthening trust, solidarity and reciprocity among citizens, and by purposefully creating opportunities for participation. UNV contributes to peace and development by advocating for recognition of volunteers, working with partners to integrate volunteerism into development programming, and mobilizing an increasing number and diversity of volunteers, including experienced UN Volunteers, throughout the world. UNV embraces volunteerism as universal and inclusive and recognizes volunteerism in its diversity as well as the values that sustain it: free will, commitment, engagement and solidarity.
Context
UNV has been active in Burundi since 1970. Based in the UNDP Country Office, the UNV field unit comprises a UNV Programme Analyst and a UNV Programme Assistant. The field unit is an integral part of the Portfolio Country Team based at UNV headquarters. The UNV Field Unit is responsible for the day-to-day management of UN Volunteers, managing UNV programs and initiatives, responding to local requests, and promoting new opportunities for UNV.
In addition to programmatic and administrative tasks, including those related to UNV assignments and contributions, the UNV Field Unit is also responsible for outreach and communication activities. Until now, the field unit has relied on the support of UN Volunteers in charge of communications within the Host Agencies. It is within this framework that the UNV Burundi Field Unit submits this description of assignment for a young UN Volunteer living with a disability, on the one hand, to fill this communication gap, and on the other hand to serve as an example to empower people living with disabilities and help ensure that no one is left behind. It’s noteworthy that UNICEF currently employs just one UN Volunteer living with limited mobility. In addition, other Host Entities are also working on diversity and inclusion, and this constitute an entry point for UNV living with disability within UN System.
We as host entity commit to the following statementWe as host entity commit to the following statement
The UN system is committed to creating an inclusive workplace and commits to taking appropriate measures to enable persons with disabilities to access employment opportunities and benefit equally from employment related opportunities by providing reasonable accommodation. Reasonable accommodation may differ depending on the disability and individual requirements. Reasonable accommodation means “necessary and appropriate modification and adjustments not imposing a disproportionate or undue burden, where needed in a particular case, to ensure to persons with disabilities the enjoyment or exercise on an equal basis with others of all human rights and fundamental freedoms “(Article 2, UN CRPD).
For UN Volunteer assignments reserved for persons with disabilities and funded by UN Entities, reasonable accommodation provisions and funds will be provided by UN Host Entities in line with their policies, guidance, and funding for reasonable accommodation.
