The NSW Family and Carers Mental Health Program (FCMHP) operates across NSW where staff from both Local Health Districts and selected non-Government Organisations (NGOs) work side by side in a collaborative approach to provide a comprehensive range of support services and training and education to families and carers of people with a mental illness.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Carer Advocate will develop and maintain an excellent program of carer support which provides information, education, advocacy, individual and peer support to relatives and friends of people with mental illness (carers).

ODMH operates locally as self-organised teams – called Recovery 2gether teams. Team members are collectively responsible and accountable for:

  • People we support (e.g. clients, consumers, family and carers)
  • Team tasks

As a team member, you will work collaboratively with other team members to facilitate the effective operation of the team.

You are a compassionate and driven individual with a deep commitment to supporting families and carers of people living with mental illness. Your approach is rooted in empathy, ensuring that every interaction is meaningful and supportive. You are a proactive and adaptable team player, capable of working autonomously within a self-organising team structure, while also contributing to shared goals.

  • Certificate IV in a relevant discipline (e.g. mental health, peer work, disability) or equivalent experience
  • Knowledge of the NSW mental health system and local services
  • An understanding of the recovery- based approach to assisting people with severe and persistent mental illness
  • Experience in working with families and carers and/or people with a mental illness
  • Experience in the provision of training
  • Communicate effectively in all interactions with all stakeholders
  • Demonstrated experience in developing positive relationships within community development framework to achieve outcomes
  • Ability to exercise personal responsibility and work as part of a self-organising team, with the support and guidance of Coach
  • Demonstrated computer literacy to use Microsoft programs and the capability to learn other applications.
  • Current driver’s licence and access to a fully ensured motor vehicle
