The Great Basin Institute (GBI), in cooperation with the National Park Service (NPS) at Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument (TUSK), is recruiting 1 Restoration Technician to join GBI’s Research Associate (RA) Program under the additional direction of the Integrated Resources Program Manager with NPS at TUSK.

Primary Responsibilities:
This position will be to hire an invasive weed and restoration technician that will focus on hand-pulling invasive weeds from high visitor use areas such as trailheads and roads, in addition to surveying and monitoring invasive weeds along trails/roads and monitoring and mitigating social trails to include reconstruction of trails, decommissioning and rehabilitation of abandoned roads and off-road vehicle disturbance (ORV); assessing, repairing, and constructing ORV barriers; native plant salvage and seed collection; native plant propagation and outplanting; removing exotic invasive plants from rare plant and vector locations; public outreach and education activities may include presenting at local or professional meetings and conducting weed-pull projects with volunteers. The technician will collaborate and sometimes work in conjunction with TUSK staff, Lake Mead Invasive Plant Management Team and the Desert Research Institute. There will be potential opportunities for other projects. 

Contract Timeline:

  •  Approximately 25 weeks/ 6 month appointment beginning in September pending successful completion of DOI Background Investigation, with the possibility of extension up to 24 months upon satisfactory performance.
  • This is a full time position (with potential for part time), that will be working 40/week
  • Flexible Work Schedule: Typically 5-8’s or 4-10’s

Location:
Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument is located north of Las Vegas and North Las Vegas, Nevada. The Monument was founded in December 2014 to protect and preserve Pleistocene era fossils within the Upper Las Vegas Wash. The Monument is located near the Desert National Wildlife Refuge (USFWS) and Ice Age Fossils State Park (State of Nevada). Monument offices are located in Boulder City, NV based out of the Lake Mead National Recreation Area Headquarters.

Compensation and Benefits: 

  • Wage: $19/hr.

Qualifications:

  • Comfortable working independently
  • Willingness to learn
  • Demonstrated ability to identify plants
  • Experience working with the public
  • Comfortable leading a volunteer group/ or a small crew
  • Enthusiasm about the position, with interest in and knowledge of botany and invasive species monitoring
  • Ability to safely navigate to field sites using maps/compass and handheld GPS devices;
  • High level of proficiency leading field work in dynamic field settings;
  • Excellent organizational skills;
  • Reliable, team-player with strong leadership and communication skills;
  • Possession of a clean, valid, state-issued driver’s license;

Preferred Qualifications:

  • State Issued Herbicide Applicator Certificate
  • Experience creating and working with maps in GIS
