Position: Assistant Farm Manager
Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation has an opening for a part-time Assistant Farm Manager in the United Community Centers Division for the East New York Farms program. ENYF has two farms that collaborate with community residents and staff and aims to increase the availability of healthy food and build stronger relationships in the community. All of the produce grown at the farm are typically provided for food distributions. We are looking for an Assistant Farm Manager to support the general upkeep of the farm. We are looking for a committed and reliable individual who is willing to learn.
Principal Duties:
- Assist Farm Manager in all aspects of crop production at the farm, including soil management and field preparation, greenhouse seeding and seedling management, transplanting, direct seeding, weeding, irrigation, harvesting and post-harvest handling of produce.
- Support with the facilitation of the project operations and support of farm projects.
- Implement fertility, weed, pest and disease management plans as directed by the Farm Manager.
- Support the management of weekly distribution of produce to the community and local partners.
- Serves as the lead supporting staff on volunteer days.
- Supports Farm manager with training and supervising a crew of youth interns assigned to support agricultural space.
- Assists Farm Manager with implementing the seasonal work plan as well as weekly and daily “to do” lists.
- Administration, data collection and record-keeping for the farm, such as crop records, tool inventory, etc.
- Act as an ambassador for ENYF, such as conducting outreach within the community, leading tours to visitors, and agricultural workshops.
- Demonstrates commitment to leadership development, community building, and community organizing as strategies for social change.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements:
- 1-3 years experience in urban agriculture, youth development, and/or community building.
- Demonstrated ability to work within a diverse community (people of different ages, abilities and cultural backgrounds).
- Comfortable working outside in all weather and capable of lifting 40 pounds.
- Drivers License required.
- Familiar and proficient with G-Suite (Google Drive, Sheets, Docs, Calendar, Gmail) and computer applications.
Supervision:
Reports directly to Farm Manager
Compensation:
- $20 – 25 per hour, not to exceed 29 hours in any week, Tuesday – Saturday .
- All part-time employees are eligible to participate in the agency’s 403b Tax Deferred Retirement Investment Plan.
- In addition, all part-time employees are eligible to participate in the agency’s Commuter Flexible Spending Plan.
- CHLDC also follows the New York City Earned Sick Time Act.
Work Environment:
This position works in an urban agricultural setting during the workday with some time spent in an office. This role routinely uses farm equipment and some office equipment.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit and climb or balance. The employee must regularly lift and/or move objects up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Travel:
Local travel is expected for this position.
