The Assistant Director position supports the development, implementation, and management of vocational pathway programs. The position is responsible for the delivery and management of Vocational Learning Programs (VLP) for ACT public schools, ASbAs in Government Initiative, Work Experience Program (WEX) and supporting the Head Start Pilot Program and industry pathways. The position is also responsible for the growth of ASbAs more broadly in ACT schools, through a continuous improvement lens and managing relevant stakeholders.

You will be required to maintain and communicate the organisation’s strategy for the provision and promotion of vocational pathways, ensuring that the business processes and information required to support the implementation of high-quality VET delivery in ACT public schools are accurate and up to date.

You will support engagement with senior leaders, RTO managers and other internal and external stakeholders to ensure their complex needs are understood, prioritised, and incorporated into Directorate plans with progress communicated throughout the project delivery process.

Our ideal candidate takes ownership of issues and will demonstrate the ability to work with a variety of stakeholders to understand business requirements and work collaboratively to develop effective solutions that can be applied universally.  This will include working collaboratively across business units and directorates to develop documentation and run workshops.

The role requires highly developed written and verbal communication skills, as well as excellent interpersonal skills to liaise effectively with internal and external stakeholders, including business and industry.  

Ideally you will have proven ability to establish and manage projects within tight timeframes, build relationships, communicate effectively and influence stakeholders. 

You have the ability to ‘wear multiple hats’ and juggle priorities, are resilient and tactful, passionate about what you do and committed to making a difference.

Eligibility/Other requirements:

Mandatory requirements

  • Possession of a current Driver’s Licence and access to a private vehicle.
  • To be eligible for temporary employment you must be in Australia on a visa with work rights or be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.   
  • Working with Vulnerable People (WWVP) – Prior to commencing this role, a current registration issued under the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011 is required. For further information on Working with Vulnerable People registration refer to – Working with vulnerable people (WWVP) registration (act.gov.au).

Highly desirable

  • Career Practitioner qualification, including demonstrated experience coaching others.
  • A highly developed understanding of the vocational education and training sector (VET) in the ACT and experience in the design and delivery of VET programs.
  • A sound understanding of the ACT public school system and the roles and responsibilities of the ACT Board of Senior Secondary Studies and the Canberra Institute of Technology.

Notes:

This is a temporary position available immediately to 03 January 2027, with the possibility of permanency. A Merit Pool will be established from this selection process and will be used to fill vacancies over the next 12 months. Selection may be based on application and referee reports only.
