Org. Setting and Reporting

  • This position is located in the Europe and Central Asia Division (ECAD) as part of the shared Regional Structure of the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA) and Department of Peace Operations (DPO). The incumbent reports to the Deputy Director of the division.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Research Assistant will be responsible for the following duties: (These duties are generic and may not be carried out by all Research Assistants.)

  • Researches, extracts and compiles basic information and technical data on specific files/programmes/projects and related topics and issues.
  • Reviews, stores, classifies, and maintains relevant computerized databases.
  • Sorts, consolidates, extracts and processes data and enters into relevant database.
  • Assists in monitoring developments/issues on subjects or areas assigned by collecting, selecting, analysing and compiling materials from multiple sources, e.g., relevant databases, the library and the Internet.
  • Assembles original statistical material; adjusts reported data from different sources and load data into computerized database system.
  • Assists in the evaluation and examination of data sets for accuracy, clarity and validity.
  • Assists in the maintenance of relevant computerized databases.
  • Prepares a variety of reports, correspondence, presentations, tables, lists, graphs, charts and/or diagrams for information and review by senior officers.
  • Prepares abstracts/bibliographic descriptions for inclusion in documentsPerforms general administrative tasks, supports visiting senior officials and other representatives, including by creating and maintaining visitors’ schedules and organizing meetings, and reviews, stores, classifies, and maintains relevant computerized databases.Takes notes and drafts executive summaries of meetings.
  • Collects organizes and disseminates relevant UN and media information.
  • Provides guidance/training to new/junior staff
  • Assists with the collection and analysis of data as well as preparation of data presentations and reports for information sharing, responding to queries, knowledge management, planning and decision making.
  • Assists with visualizations and updating information material such as web pages or brochures.
  • Performs other related work as required.

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Work Experience

  • Experience in collecting and researching data across various areas of social and economic development or related area is required. A minimum of five years of experience in programme or project administration, general office, administrative office or research assistance is required. The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to three for candidates who possess a first-level university degree or higher. Experience with office software such as Microsoft Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, SharePoint, PowerPoint and OneDrive is required. Experience using Unite Connections, Unite Docs, Unite Correspondence is required. Experience working with ERP systems such as Umoja is desirable. One year or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable. Relevant work experience with the United Nations or similar international organization is desirable.

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in both oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
