Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Kiswahili Unit, News Section II, News and Content Branch, News and Media Division, Department of Global Communications. The News and Content Branch is primarily a multimedia service provided by the United Nations to promote the universal ideals of the United Nations, including peace, respect for human rights and developments. It produces a range of audio, video and multimedia products across eight languages available to media organizations around the world. The incumbent reports to the Chief of the Unit. This position is temporarily available for an initial period of six (6) months, with possibility of extension.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties: • Researches, writes and produces multimedia news and feature stories in Kiswahili for radio magazine programmes, which are also posted on the web; • Rewrites official releases, statements, and features based on UN activities system-wide in Kiswahili for posting on the UN News web page and social media; • Ability to travel to cover conferences and field reporting; • Duties on a daily basis include: Reviewing press releases, statements and other official news material from UN organs, offices and agencies for inclusion in the daily news programme and on air broadcasting; • Assists in updating material on the Kiswahili web page, as necessary; • Acts as media contact person on selected stories, conduct interviews, set up interviews , produce and edit videos, and posting stories, features, videos and photos on the main page and social media pages; • Perform other duties as required.

Education
An advanced university degree (Master’s degree, or equivalent) in journalism, mass communication, media studies, broadcasting or related area. A first-level degree with combination of two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. A first-level degree and no experience will be accepted for candidates who have passed the United Nations Young Professionals Programme Examination (YPP), the United Nations National Recruitment Examination (NCRE) or the General Service to Professional Examination (G to P).

Work Experience
A minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public administration or related area is required. Experience in on-air studio presentation for radio and multimedia broadcast journalism in Kiswahili is required. Experience drafting and writing news and feature stories for online portals is required. Experience in the technical aspects of multimedia production, such as mastering of digital editing tools, creating audio clips and broadcast programmes, filming and editing short news video pieces is desirable. Experience managing social media platforms and analytics is desirable.
Languages
Fluency in one of the working languages of the UN Secretariat, English or French, is required. For this post fluency in English and Kiswahili is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

United Nations Considerations
According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity.
