Position description

Kiva is an international nonprofit operating in over 70 countries with a mission of expanding financial access and helping underserved communities thrive. We achieve this by crowdfunding loans on kiva.org for entrepreneurs, smallholder farmers, students, and more individuals while tackling the barriers to financial access globally through innovative projects and partnerships. We blend the agility of a tech start-up with the compassion of a nonprofit to drive impact and create opportunities at a global scale. With 100+ employees and 400+ volunteers located around the world, we’re growing as we seize new opportunities to build a more financially inclusive world.

Duties

Ready to use your language skills to create opportunity around the world? Apply to become a Kiva Volunteer Reviewer!

This is an unpaid, remote volunteer position.

Kiva’s Review and Translation Program partners with over 400 volunteers who support Kiva’s mission of expanding financial access. They do so by editing or translating loan profiles and providing a policy review of these profiles before they are posted on Kiva.org for funding. Each profile gives a snapshot of the borrower’s background and how they plan to use their loan, helping connect individuals with Kiva lenders. Kiva Volunteers come from many different backgrounds, ranging from graduate students to retired professionals. All loan review is done online, making it easy to work from anywhere—whether it’s your dorm room, a hotel, or your favorite coffee shop! If you apply to join the Review and Translation Program, you will have the opportunity to become a Volunteer Editor or a Volunteer Translator.

Kiva Volunteer Editors review loans in English, while Kiva Volunteer Translators translate loan profiles from French, Portuguese, Russian, OR Spanish to English. The volunteer role requirements are: –

  • If you are an Editor, edit loan profiles for grammar and punctuation errors.
  • If you are a Translator, translate loan profiles from one of the following languages to English: French, Portuguese, Russian, OR Spanish
  • Check each loan profile for clarity and alignment with Kiva’s policies.
  • Important: Volunteers do not decide if borrowers get approved or denied for loans. This is done by Kiva and Lending Partners. Learn more and join Kiva’s team of volunteers by copying and pasting this link into your browser: https://grnh.se/3c243cc71us

Please note: Some applications on our site may be waitlisted. Right now, we’re recruiting but not onboarding for all languages. Join the waitlist, and we’ll reach out when we’re ready to onboard. Thanks for your patience!

Qualifications

  • Able to commit to at least 2 hours per week (i.e., about 20 loans per month) for a minimum of 6 months, though one year is preferable
  • Responsive via email–including emails from Kiva Volunteer Coordinators and Kiva Team Leaders
  • Comfortable with new technology
  • You must be at least 18 years of age to apply.
  • The online platform Kiva volunteers use is not mobile or tablet-friendly, so volunteers must have access to a computer.
  • You will sign a volunteer agreement that covers protecting the privacy of Kiva borrowers as well as a standard media release.
