Position description

The Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation (VCDNP), an international non-governmental organisation based in Vienna, Austria, is seeking individuals who have recently completed or are currently pursuing a graduate degree, preferably in natural sciences (physics, chemistry, biology, computing, or engineering), or in relevant social sciences subjects, such as international relations, law, or political science.

The Center’s mission is to facilitate fruitful, result‑oriented dialogue among national governments, international organisations, and civil society on nuclear disarmament and non‑proliferation and to conduct research, education, and training programmes on these issues.

Candidates should have a demonstrated interest in topics related to the Center’s work. This includes but is not limited to nuclear safeguards, the security of nuclear material and facilities, the impact of artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies on nuclear non-proliferation, technical challenges in nuclear disarmament verification, peaceful applications of nuclear technologies, and others.

During their internship, the intern will:

  • Develop and implement an independent research project on an issue related to nuclear non‑proliferation, nuclear disarmament, or the peaceful applications of nuclear technologies, supervised by VCDNP researchers;
  • Work alongside senior experts at the VCDNP on ongoing research projects;
  • Contribute to programmatic activities at the VCDNP, including events, seminars, courses and conferences arranged by the VCDNP;
  • Have the opportunity to interact with experts from the IAEA, CTBTO, and other international organisations in Vienna, as well as representatives from national governments and academia;
  • Assist with administrative tasks and events;
  • Perform other related duties as requested.

Qualifications

  • Currenly pursuing or recently graudated from a graduate degree, preferably in natural sciences (physics, chemistry, biology, computing or engineering) or in international relations or political science;
  • Proven interest in policy issues relating to nuclear non-proliferation, disarmament, or peaceful nuclear technology applications;
  • Strong writing skills with excellent proficiency in English (proficiency in additional languages is a plus);
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and virtual meeting software (Zoom, Webex);
  • Experience with basic graphic design tools (Canva), online collaborative platforms (MS Teams, etc.), and social media platforms is desirable;
  • The position requires light to moderate physical effort and the ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time.
