Working Environment 

Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) is a faith based International NGO that has been working in Iraq for the past ten years. Our mission is to accompany, serve and advocate on behalf of refugees and other forcibly displaced persons. JRS Iraq belongs to JRS Middle East and North Africa Regional Office coordinating the work in Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, and Iraq. In 2024, thirteen people work in the CO and JRS Iraq runs programmes mostly in Qaraqosh, Sharya and Sinuni for an approximate total of 150 staff members.

 

General Purpose of the Position 

The Social Worker 

helps to implement the protection component of the JRS programme in Sinuni, Sinjar 

  • provides holistic individual social work support and group activities 
  • ensures the safety of and improves practical and social support for displaced genocide survivors, including survivors of ISIS captivity and GBV. 

 

Main Responsibility Of The Position 

A) Individual Case Management/One-to-one Support 

  1. Conduct assessment and plan of support according to case management steps and guidelines 
  2. Provide individual support to improve social and practical problems and emotional well-being 
  3. Work closely with MHPSS team to ensure safety risks are managed and high-risk and protection cases are dealt with accordingly, particularly for GBV and Child Protection cases 
  4. Provide tailored case management for child survivors of ISIS captivity, work with MHPSS team on rehabilitation programme 
  5. Conduct the First Assessment for all cases referred to MHPSS services. 
  6. Work with caregivers and family of child survivors to improve home environment and engagement in the programme 
  7. Support the Family Visits teams to identify protection concerns and collaborate to support families in the home, conduct visits 

B) Referrals 

  1. Ensure individuals can access all relevant JRS services 
  2. Manage referrals to external service providers and ensure adequate follow-up 
  3. Cultivate relationships with local organisations to improve referrals and map services. 

 

C) Awareness Raising 

  1. Assist teams to carry out awareness raising sessions with groups of adults and/or children on protection topics 
  2. Help individuals to understand their rights and services they can access 
  3. Help to provide psychoeducation to community members on mental health topics and to reduce stigma on accessing services. 

D) Protection Focal Point 

  1. Act as a focal person for protection in Sinuni 
  2. Analyse the needs of people served, collect information on protection issues and trends as part of daily work 
  3. Ensure implementation of protection policies and guidance 
  4. Conduct and attend protection training as required. 

E) Recording and Reporting 

  1. Assist FV teams to carry out awareness raising sessions with groups of adults and/or children on protection topics 
  2. Help individuals to understand their rights and services they can access 
  3. Help to provide psychoeducation to community members on mental health topics and to reduce stigma on accessing services 

 

Other 

  1. Respond to other tasks as required by the supervisor 
  2. Attend supervision meetings 
  3. Attend working groups as required. 

 

 

 

 

Skills and Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree or other qualification in social work, psychology, sociology, or relevant field. 
  • Reliability and confidentiality. 
  • Previous experience would be an asset 
  • Outstanding communication skills, reporting skills, and excellent interpersonal skills 
  • Self-awareness, objectivity, a strong desire to help others 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office365 applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) 
  • Fluent Kurdish and Arabic, and proficiency in written English.
