Overview

In collaboration with MOMENTUM and FHD/GHS, develop postpartum family planning guidelines to reflect immediate postpartum family planning and post-abortion family planning to meet the targeted (Postpartum women, adolescents, and HIV-positive women) population’s needs.  

Responsibilities

Situation Analysis

  • Conduct a desk review of existing national policies, strategies, and frameworks related to family planning and maternal health. 
  • Assess the status of PPFP services in the country, identifying gaps, challenges, and opportunities for improvement. 
  • Review international best practices in PPFP  
  • Engage key stakeholders (Ministry of Health, healthcare professionals, NGOs, etc.) to collect insights on current PPFP practices, challenges, and priorities. 

Stakeholder Engagement and Consultation

  • Organize and facilitate consultations with key stakeholders including government representatives, healthcare providers, international agencies, and civil society to gather inputs on the guideline’s content. 
  • Prepare and present draft findings to stakeholders for feedback. 
  • Incorporate feedback and adjust the scope and direction of the guideline as required. 

Development of the Post-Partum Family Planning Guideline

  • Draft a comprehensive PPFP guideline, including: 
  • Definition and importance of PPFP. 
  • Evidence-based recommendations for the provision of contraceptive services within the first 12 months postpartum. 
  • Specific contraceptive methods suitable for postpartum women, considering lactation, medical conditions, and cultural preferences. 
  • Counselling strategies for PPFP during antenatal, delivery, and postnatal care. 
  • Integrating PPFP services with maternal and child health services. 
  • Strategies for improving access to and uptake of PPFP services in various healthcare settings, including rural and underserved areas. 
  • Monitoring and evaluation framework for assessing the success of PPFP programs. 
  • Consideration of gender, human rights, and cultural factors influencing access to family planning. 

Validation and Finalization of Guideline

  • Present the draft guideline to key stakeholders for validation. 
  • Organize and facilitate a validation workshop to review and finalize the guidelines. 
  • Incorporate final feedback and prepare the guideline for formal adoption by the Ministry of Health. 

Training and Dissemination Plan

  • Develop a plan for the training of healthcare workers on the new PPFP guideline. 
  • Create a dissemination strategy to ensure that the guideline reaches all relevant healthcare facilities, professionals, and stakeholders. 
  • Prepare materials (e.g., presentations, briefs) to assist in the dissemination and advocacy for the guideline’s adoption. 

Methodology

  • Inception meeting with key stakeholders including the GHS and MCGL team.
  • Desk Review of the PPFP guidelines 
  • Consultations with FHD and other stakeholders on key areas of need. 
  • Prepare the first draft and share it with key stakeholders for their input.
  • Validation with stakeholders for their buy-in and input
  • Final submission of Guidelines

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of a master’s degree in a related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of professional experience in working with learning networks for national-level programming in Health and Reproductive Health.
  • Experience in preparation of guidelines  
  • Ability to work rapidly, both in person and remotely, with team members in various locations.
  • Experience working in Ghana and across sub-Saharan Africa and understanding of the regional and especially the national Family Planning situation in Ghana 
  • working with donor-funded programs in the health sector
  • Excellent writing, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Fluent written and spoken English required
