ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) is the specialized agency of the United Nations that promotes industrial development for poverty reduction, inclusive globalization and environmental sustainability. The mission of UNIDO, as described in the Lima Declaration adopted at the fifteenth session of the UNIDO General Conference in 2013 as well as the Abu Dhabi Declaration adopted at the eighteenth session of UNIDO General Conference in 2019, is to promote and accelerate inclusive and sustainable industrial development (ISID) in Member States. The relevance of ISID as an integrated approach to all three pillars of sustainable development is recognized by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which will frame United Nations and country efforts towards sustainable development. UNIDO’s mandate is fully recognized in SDG-9, which calls to “Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation”. The relevance of ISID, however, applies in greater or lesser extent to all SDGs. Accordingly, the Organization’s programmatic focus is structured in four strategic priorities: Creating shared prosperity; Advancing economic competitiveness; Safeguarding the environment; and Strengthening knowledge and institutions.

Each of these programmatic fields of activity contains a number of individual programmes, which are implemented in a holistic manner to achieve effective outcomes and impacts through UNIDO’s four enabling functions: (i) technical cooperation; (ii) analytical and research functions and policy advisory services; (iii) normative functions and standards and quality-related activities; and (iv) convening and partnerships for knowledge transfer, networking and industrial cooperation. Such core functions are carried out in Divisions/Offices in its Headquarters, Regional Offices and Hubs and Country Offices.

The Directorate of Technical Cooperation and Sustainable Industrial Development (TCS), headed by a Managing Director, ensures the Organization’s application of strategies and interventions for sustainable industrial development related to environment, energy, Micro, Small and Medium-Enterprises (MSMEs), and digitalization. The Directorate also oversees the Organization’s normative contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals through industrial policy advice and capacity development. Through coordination in-house and with Member States and industry stakeholders, it ensures that the services provided in these areas contribute to effective and appropriate technical, business and policy solutions and are focused on results, scaling up and positioning UNIDO as a leading platform for industrial development in developing countries and global fora. The Directorate is responsible for the Division of Industrial Policy Advice and Capacity Development (TCS/IPC), and technical Divisions of Circular Economy and Green Industry (TCS/CEG), Energy and Climate Action (TCS/ECA), Climate Innovation and Montreal Protocol (TCS/CMP); MSME Competitiveness, Quality and Job Creation (TCS/SME); and Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence (TCS/DAI). Leveraging the diverse skill sets of UNIDO personnel and the services provided by the two TC directorates, TCS collaborates closely with IET to develop and implement programmes and projects, aiming at enhancing synergy and complementarity and maximizing UNIDO corporate performance and impacts on the ground. The Directorate also ensures close coordination and collaboration among the Divisions as well as with relevant entities in all Directorates across the Organization.

 

The position is located under the Division of Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence (TCS/DAI) promotes digital transformation and Artificial Intelligence as well as associated technologies as part of innovation ecosystems consisting of productive capacities in manufacturing, services and digital firms, with the purpose to advance the competitiveness of industries and manufacturing firms in Member States. It helps industries to benefit from the rapid progress in digital and convergent technologies associated with the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), ensuring a smooth transition towards safe and secured cyber- physical industrial systems and a smart society and mitigating any negative adverse effects on employment and quality of work. Through the Division’s services, the productive transformation is the key, by integrating industrial businesses, dynamic entrepreneurship, and acceleration services, and by applying technological innovation to smart manufacturing, smart energy, smart agribusiness and others, in developing countries, transition and emerging economies, with emphasis in developing countries to provide the opportunity to technologically catch up instead of falling behind industries in more advanced countries.

 

PROJECT CONTEXT (ID 220253: AIM Global and AISMA)

 

The increasing importance of digital transformation and AI in industry has underscored the need for strategic sponsorships and diversified funding sources for the projects of the Division of Digital Transformation and AI (TCS/DAI), particularly the Global Alliance on AI for Industry and Manufacturing (AIM Global) and the Alliance for I4.0 and Smart Manufacturing in Africa (AISMA), which aims to advance the digitalization of industry through robust partnerships with traditional and emerging donors, government entities, the private sector, other UN agencies, and various stakeholders. These sponsorships support the implementation of TCS/DAI technical cooperation projects, advocate for industrial innovation, and promote sustainable development. In this context, the need has been identified to hire a Fundraising Expert who will be part of the TCS/DAI team and will contribute to the development and management of new and existing sponsorships, including private sector collaborations, to mobilize resources and support the AIM Global, AISMA and other Division’s goals.

 

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Under the direct supervision of the Project Manager and in close cooperation with the project team in the HQ and field location, the Fundraising Expert will be responsible for the following main tasks:

  • Identify and map potential sponsorships: map existing and new partners locally and internationally to align with UNIDO’s strategic objectives in digital transformation and AI.
  • Explore and establish sponsorships: explore opportunities and frameworks to establish triangular sponsorships with host governments, other UN agencies, and the private sector, including twinning arrangements.
  • Develop sponsorship strategies: contribute to the creation of Sponsorship Action Plans and identify potential collaborations with private and public sectors.
  • Prepare strategic agreements and advocacy: develop strategic agreements, joint strategies, and MOUs to promote the digitalization of industry and highlight resource mobilization opportunities.

  1. SPONSOR RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT
  • Contribute to the acquisition of new Members to TCS/DAI alliances (AIM Global and AISMA, as applicable and appropriate)
  • Maintain donor and potential relationships: develop and maintain strong working relationships with existing and potential donors, treating them as strategic partners.
  • Manage sponsorship portfolio: assist in managing a portfolio of sponsorships, soliciting contributions, providing donor stewardship, and analyzing results to maximize resources raised.
  • Ensure donor communication: provide timely and relevant information and reporting to donors, addressing their concerns and integrating their feedback into project implementation and evaluation.
  • Ensure partner visibility and compliance: uphold donor visibility and ensure all donor conditions and best interests are met.
  • Prepare stakeholder briefings: create briefing documents for meetings with stakeholders, including donors, and maintain effective relationships with government representatives. 
  • Support resource mobilization activities: assist in resource mobilization activities, including proposal writing, preparation of briefing materials, and divisional/project/ad-hoc reporting.

  1. PROJECT MANAGEMENT SUPPORT
  • Support Project Manager and Chief of Division: Assist the Project Manager and the Chief of Division in resource mobilization and sponsorship relations, providing technical support to activities related to resource mobilization.
  • Support senior managers in various tasks as required to foster sponsorship growth and achieve goals within the context of TC project on digitalization. Contribute to preparedness actions by providing technical recommendations and guidance and monitor defined risks.
  • Collate and analyze data to prepare accurate and timely reports on donors and programs, facilitating informed decision-making and action planning by the Project Manager and the Chief of Division. 
  • Sponsorship data management: gather and present internal and external data/information using key information systems (e.g., SAP, Dynamics 365, UNIDO databases) to support UNIDO’s effective positioning with national governments, regional, and international institutions.  
  • Support and assistance to the management in sponsorship and donor relations development provided.

  • Perform other tasks relevant to the effective implementation of the sponsorship and donor relations development. 
  • Coordinate internally: Coordinate with other functional units in UNIDO to ensure the alignment of activities, ensuring donor visibility and compliance with donor conditions. 

 

 

 

MINIMUM ORGANIZATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

 

Education: Advanced university level degree (master’s or equivalent) in business administration, economics, international relations, engineering, sciences or other relevant discipline is required.

 

Technical and Functional Experience:

  • At least five (5) years of professional experience in the relevant field, including exposure in the context of resource mobilization, strategy and event management is required.
  • Experience in resource mobilization, including in-kind sponsorships for activities and high-profile events, is required.
  • Ability to research and analyze information independently and recommend solutions is required.
  • Ability to write in a clear and concise manner is required.
  • Ability to work effectively in multi-cultural teams is required.

 

Languages: Fluency in written and spoken English is required. Fluency and/or working knowledge of another official UN language and German is desirable.
