OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

Under the direct supervision of the Head of the UNESCO Windhoek Office, and working in close collaboration with the Communications and Information Advisor in the Regional Office for Southern Africa, the incumbent will contribute to the implementation of Communications and Information activities as well as facilitate public visibility for the overall programme of work carried out by the UNESCO Windhoek Office.  Activities will contribute to implementation of Namibia’s National Development Plan (NDP), the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) in Namibia, 2025-2029, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and the African Union Agenda 2063.

More specifically, the incumbent will:

1. ENSURE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE CI SECTOR WORKPLANS

  1. Provide technical inputs for the development, administration and implementation of the Communications and Information workplans in Namibia, including responsibly committing and tracking of financial outlays.
  2. Draft in a timely manner and in accordance with UNESCO’s rules, regulations and guidelines, all narrative and analytical reports, briefings, documents, contracts, and correspondence related to the Communications and Information Sector work in Namibia, including for submission to Headquarters, the Regional Office, UN Namibia reporting channels and or entry into UNESCO reporting applications.
  3. Organize and participate in relevant Communications and Information related meetings within UNESCO, or those organized by the UN System in Namibia, Government of Namibia, and development partners including academia and civil society organizations.
  4. Undertake missions, facilitate discussions and capacity development, and engage in other fact-finding activities relevant for implementation of the Communications and Information work program in Namibia.

2. ENSURE PUBLIC VISIBILITY AND COMMUNICATION

  1. Draft and regularly update UNESCO’s social media pages (Twitter, Facebook and website) with relevant content for visibility of UNESCO’s work in Namibia
  2. Prepare media briefs, talking points, human interest stories, and visibility material on UNESCO activities and international celebrations, and mobilize Namibia media and partners to give coverage to UNESCO’s activities
  3. Participate in and represent UNESCO Windhoek’s interests in working groups related to public information communication
  4. Contribute to the preparation of the UNESCO Windhoek’s Office Annual Report, including editing and design.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Advanced university degree (Master or equivalent) in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, International Relations, or a related field. A combination of a first advanced university degree with four years of experience in communication work may be substituted for the particular fields mentioned.

 Work Experience

  • At least two (2) years of relevant professional experience in one or several subject areas of communication and information.
  • Experience in planning, coordinating and managing projects
  • Strong English language drafting skills (reports, articles, publications, briefings, etc.).

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

 Skills and Competencies

  • Good written and oral communication skills, human relations and team building.
  • Ability to interact with people from different disciplines, and with varying degrees of technical experience.

 Languages

  • Excellent knowledge of English (oral and written).

UNESCO’s salaries consist of a basic salary and other benefits which may include if applicable: 30 days annual leave, medical insurance, pension plan etc.

Salary is calculated according to the UN salary scale for Locally Recruited Staff
