The British Embassy in Muscat has a vacancy for two Security Officers, job grade S2, on a fixed term contract for one (1) year.
The security team works 365 days a year and cover 24 hours per day. The successful candidate will be expected to regularly work weekends, bank holidays and public holidays as part of your rotation. You will also be expected to be flexible to cover shifts at short notice. This job will cover two security sites, 25km apart, the British Embassy in Muscat and the Ambassador’s Residence, Bandar al Rawdah. You will be expected to cover both sites as part of your work. Preference for location will not be given based on individual home location.
Main Purpose of the Job:
To enable the operational success of the British Embassy platform, by maintaining and protecting the established security environment. Ensuring the safety of all staff and families and by protecting the FCDO assets and reputation.
The jobholder will work as part of an established and capable team to ensure the security of the Embassy. You must have strong communication skills and the ability to give clear and concise advice on a range of security topics and be able to enforce security policy and procedure in a calm, pragmatic and professional manner.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- To be aware of the Security State of Vigilance (SOV) defined by the Post Security Committee, by observing the SOV board in the gatehouse on a daily basis.
- Regularly foot patrolling inside and outside of the Embassy and Ambassador’s residence compound, in line with the post SOV.
- Searching vehicles in line with the post SOV.
- Searching staff, visitors and contractors entering the Embassy and Ambassador’s compound, in line with the post SOV.
- Managing access of visitors to the Embassy and Ambassador’s residence by checking access passes and IDs against visitor lists and controlling the access gates and doors.
- Managing vehicular access to the Embassy and Ambassador’s residence by checking vehicle passes and details against visitor lists and registered vehicle passes.
- Controlling the access of materials to and from site by searching and making sure the correct process for removal of materials is authorised.
- Taking ID from visitors and contractors, checking the ID against visitor logs and issuing visitor passes.
- Monitoring of CCTV cameras to detect intrusion or any suspicious activity.
- Making regular checks of security equipment to make sure it is operational and reporting any faults through the correct channels.
- Securing the Embassy at the end of the working day by making sure all doors and windows are secure and that the main doors are locked in line with the established security protocols.
- Scanning, sorting and managing incoming post, diplomatic bags and other deliveries.
- Maintain security logs, such as visitor and contractor access.
- Recording on the handover sheet the completion of security duties and handing over to the next team and management, any issues that will require follow up, such as maintenance.
- Manage and control access to all keys, making sure they are signed and countersigned when booked out.
- Reacting to security incidents in a calm and disciplined manner, working as part of a team.
- Participating in exercises and learning and development activities.
- Studying and understanding security policy and procedures to be able to offer security advice to all staff.
- Reacting and responding to panic alarms and bomb alarms quickly and safely to assess any danger presented and to take appropriate action.
- Actively liaising with the Royal Omani Police checkpoint to manage access requirements when required.
- Acting as first point of contact outside office hours, responding to requests for assistance from Embassy staff and advising visitors of the regular working hours and details of the official website.
- Driving duties, as and when required, to assist in the day to day running of the embassy.
The above list is not exhaustive and the jobholder will be required to be flexible and take on other responsibilities on an ad hoc basis, including participating in the Embassy’s emergency planning and any other response to a crisis affecting UK citizens.

- At least two (2) years of relevant experience in a customer focussed industry background or uniformed services (police, military) or commercial security or diplomatic security with checkable references.
- Proficiency in English and Arabic, both written and spoken. Able to express ideas and messages clearly.
- Able to work variable shifts and weekends at two separate locations.
- Team player who is also capable of working on their own initiative.
- Strong customer focus and ability to deliver quality service.

- Must be physically fit and pass level 5.4 of the bleep test/ Job related fitness test.

Eligibility:
If you are selected for this position, we will be able to employ you as long as you:
- Holds a right to live and work in Oman.
- The successful candidate will be required to transfer their visa under the Embassy’s sponsorship.
Working Conditions and Remuneration:
The Embassy offers an attractive working environment and remuneration package for the role, including a non-negotiable salary of 500.50 Omani Riyals per month inclusive of all allowances; and use of on-site recreational facilities including a swimming pool and social club.
This position is for a full-time employment, on a fixed-term basis for one (1) year with a possibility of renewal, subject to 3-month probationary period.
Conditioned working hours are 38.5 hours per week. The security team is on a shift pattern, covering morning, afternoon and night shifts as required. The team is on an eight-week shift rotation, 12-hour shift pattern: two mornings (0600 – 1800) followed by two nights (1800 – 0600) followed by four rest days (Four on, four off).
Holiday entitlement is 30 days per year (on a pro rata basis) following successful completion of a 3-month probation period. There are also national holidays determined annually by the Embassy, which usually total 14 days per year.
The FCDO offers a comprehensive L&D package via an internal learning platform. Specific L&D opportunities may be available, upon discussion with the Line Manager.
Employment in the advertised position is dependent on the potential employee having or acquiring valid UK security clearance. Security clearances can take several weeks to process. Inability to obtain a clearance will preclude employment. Loss of a security clearance at any time will lead to termination of employment.

Process:
The recruitment process, including security clearance, is expected to take around two-three months. The security clearance process includes checks available in country and with UK, dependant on the security level required for the role and the candidates’ profile and UK footprint. You may experience some delay in the progress of this recruitment campaign, and we are working hard to minimise any disruption.
Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful at interview may be placed on a ‘reserve list’. If during the reserve period of six (6) months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.
