Who are we?
The British Embassy in Kazakhstan is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic, trade, and consular interests overseas, and is now looking for a Community Liaison Officer/Fire Safety Manager to join the Operation and Corporate Services department in Astana.
Main purpose of the job
As the Community Liaison Officer you will support the well-being, integration and morale of spouses and families of UKBS by serving as a bridge between the Mission and the diplomatic community, providing information, guidance and support to help them adapt to life in Kazakhstan.
For the Fire Safety Manager role, you will ensure the safety of people, properties and operations by implementing and managing fire safety policies, procedures and systems. This role is critical in preventing fire-related incidents and ensuring full compliance with FCDO fire safety regulations.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Information gathering for UK-Based officers and their spouses/partners and families;
- Spouse/partner employment advice at Post;
- Children”s education (completion of HR School and Nursery Information Sheets of authorised schools at Post), information pack on childcare at Post, feedback on adult education;
- Completion of DSFA Spouse and Partner Annual Employment Report;
- COLA survey biannually;
- Welcoming all staff on posting/temporary duty and accompanying families to ensure as smooth an integration as possible into the life of the Post community;
- Following up to check that the settling in process is working; being a source of referral and support where questions, problems and difficulties arise; providing short Post community Induction;
- Manage the domestic equipment float where applicable;
- Conduct regular fire risk assessments in compliance with FCDO regulations;
- Review and update assessments periodically or when changes occur;
- Ensure fire detection and suppression systems are regularly tested;
- Organize fire drills for staff;
- Lead the response during fire incidents or evacuations;
- Maintain accurate records of the fire drills, inspections, incidents and maintenance.
Essential qualifications, skills and experience
Our Ideal Candidate shows:
- Fluency in English and Russian, written and spoken (minimum of C1 CEFR framework level language*);
- Minimum 2 years of professional experience working in administrative / office setting;
- Familiarity with staff support initiatives, onboarding, or community liaison activities in a multicultural environment;
- A proactive and enthusiastic team player with a commitment to delivering excellent service to internal and external stakeholders;
- Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently, maintain accurate records, and ensure timely follow-up on administrative processes;
- Proven experience in supervising staff or contractors, including task delegation and performance monitoring;
- Ability to prioritise effectively, see the bigger picture, and deliver outcomes aligned with organisational goals;
- High level of competence in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint), and confidence in using digital tools for communication and reporting.
Desirable qualifications, skills and experience
Nice to have:
- Spoken and written Kazakh language skills and IT acumen an advantage;
- Ability to support internal communications, organise staff events, and contribute to a positive workplace culture;
- Capacity to work effectively under pressure, manage competing priorities, and adapt to changing demands in a dynamic environment.

Other benefits and conditions of employment
This is a part-time, fixed-term contracts with possibility of renewal of 12 months subject to a 3 months probation period.
Salary will be 963 USD per calendar month (gross). Please note that it is the employee’s responsibility to pay individual income tax.
The start date mentioned in the advert is just an expected start date. The appointment can start earlier or later depending on several factors. Flexible working may be accommodated on request.
Employees are entitled to annual leave entitlement pro-rata based on 25 days total per calendar year. In addition, the Embassy observes up to 14 days public holidays marking different Kazakh and UK holidays.
The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a professional background check and security clearance and is expected to commence employment as soon as possible.
Visa/work permit requirements: The successful candidate must have pre-existing work authorisation for the Kazakhstan in order to apply. All applicants should have the right to live and work in Kazakhstan. The British Embassy does not sponsor applications for work permits.
Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Kazakhstan are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service based on Kazakhstan employment law.
