The British Embassy in Cairo is looking to recruit a Pro Consul under the British Sudan Office, job grade Administrative Officer (AO), on a fixed term contract of one (1) year.
The main purpose of the role is to deliver high quality and efficient consular services to British nationals in Egypt and Sudan. Reporting to the Vice Consul based in Cairo, you will be part of a small agile team delivering on a full range of consular assistance and notarial services, as well as taking part in our communications, crisis and prevention work.
Consular work can be stressful and of a sensitive nature and the operating environment in which we work can be complex. The jobholder will therefore be expected to maintain consular confidentiality and impartiality at all times.
The successful candidate will need to be a self-starter, highly motivated and have excellent interpersonal, communication and office management skills. They will also need to be fluent in both written and spoken English and Arabic.
The position will be based at the British Embassy Cairo.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Assistance and Services (20%)
- Provide high quality, appropriate consular assistance on the full range of consular work in Egypt and Sudan, including detentions, hospitalisations, welfare, parental child abduction, death, rape and sexual assaults, Emergency Travel Documents, and other types of notarial work in line with FCDO policy and guidance.
- Assistance work will require the job holder to travel within Egypt and potentially within the region.
Administration (20%)
- Maintain accurate and concise case records of services provided on our consular databases. Ensure all customer correspondence is replied to in a timely and professional manner, providing consistent, accurate information in accordance with FCDO guidelines. You will also be required to provide reports on case work trends, meetings and manage elements of the consular budget.
Prevention (20%)
- Work with the wider team to identify common issues and trends in casework and deliver activity that mitigates against incidents occurring. Build and maintain a strong network of key contacts and stakeholders including across the Mission, state officials, friendly missions, tour operators, hospitals and NGOs.
- Prevention work will require the job holder to travel within Egypt and potentially within the region.
Crisis Response (20%)
- In response to local or regional crisis, support the Consular team as well as the wider Mission and regional network. Contribute and participate in crisis exercises and the delivery of training for embassy staff who do not have consular experience.
Ad hoc tasks (20%)
- Be prepared to work sometimes out of hours, occasionally anti-social hours, as required.
- Must be aware of, and be involved in, any Post contingency and evacuation planning and response.

Eligibility:
If you are selected for this position, the Embassy will be able to employ you as long as you:
- Have the right to work and live in Egypt; and
- Receive the appropriate level of security clearance.
Working hours and remuneration:
The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role, including a non-negotiable gross salary of USD 1,049 per month, subject to insurance and tax as per the usual regulations, based on a 36 hours per week. Normal working hours are from Sunday to Wednesday 08:00-15:30 and Thursday 08:00-14:00.
Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary may have their salaries reduced by the equivalent local income tax amount.
We offer a competitive package including medical benefits, performance related bonus, recreational facilities, opportunities for job related training and development, etc. There are no other allowances payable as part of this package. No accommodation nor relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position.
This role is for a full-time employment, on a fixed-term contract of one (1) year, subject to three (3) months’ probationary period.

The recruitment process, including security clearance, is expected to take around 2-3 months. The security clearance process includes checks available in country and with UK, dependant on the security level required for the role and the candidate’s profile and UK footprint. Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful at interview may be placed on a ‘reserve list’. If during the reserve period of six (6) months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.
