POSITION DETAILS

New York City College of Technology (City Tech) of the City University of New York (CUNY), a comprehensive college in downtown Brooklyn offering 58 associate and baccalaureate degrees, invites applications for an Academic/Career Advisor in the Computer Systems Technology Department.

City Tech is seeking an Academic/Career Advisor to prepare our Computer Systems Technology students for timely graduation and meaningful employment as part of CUNY???s 2x Tech program, an initiative launched to double the number of tech bachelor???s degrees awarded by public colleges. The goals of City Tech???s CUNY 2x Tech program, housed in the Computer Systems Technology (CST) Department, include improving the career readiness of graduates, the number and percentage of students completing paid internships or apprenticeships, and the number and percentage of graduates who secure high-paying jobs in computer science-related fields upon graduation. Our strategies include working with industry partners to update degree programs to meet current and future workforce needs, particularly in cybersecurity and data science; expansion of existing collaborations within the college and externally; integrating equity, career exploration and readiness throughout the curriculum, and supports such as academic/career advisement, tutoring and mentoring.

The advisor will work directly with many stakeholders, including Computer Systems Technology department faculty and students, the College???s Professional Development Center, the College???s STAR Center which oversees advisement of incoming freshmen and transfer students, NYC-based industry partners, and the NYC Tech Talent Pipeline, to review curricula, enhance students??? job-readiness, provide academic and career advisement to a cohort of students, and help ensure these students are equipped with the academic and career readiness skills they need to obtain meaning internships in college, and are prepared to succeed in the workforce.

Reporting to the Program Manager, the Advisor will:

  • Provide mandated academic/career advisement and registration assistance for a cohort of students enrolled in the Computer Systems Technology department???s bachelor???s programs, in collaboration with the STAR Center.
  • Support students’ persistence and career readiness and expand student exposure to careers and the courses and steps needed to prepare for timely graduation and employment, in collaboration with the college???s Professional Development Center.
  • Help students prepare for internships and other opportunities to build their experience in and exposure to tech workplaces, leading to an increased number of paid internships completed in college, again in collaboration with the college???s Professional Development Center.
  • Promote connections for students to supportive services, such as tutoring, the Student Success Center, and the Professional Development Center, to increase persistence in the major.
  • Serve as a resource for staff and faculty on student advisement issues.
  • Work with students to overcome impediments to registration and graduation and provide mandated registration/advisement appointments.
  • Ensure that Computer Systems Technology students are on track to participate in relevant CUNY 2x Tech-related programs.
  • Maintain database of students within the advising cohort. Verify students are making timely progress.
  • Perform graduation checks.
  • Maintain communication with alumni and their employers.
  • Provide feedback to faculty from alumni and employers to help aid curricular and programmatic decisions.
  • Perform related duties and occasional weekend responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree and four years’ related experience required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • An understanding of the tech industry and its relationship to higher education.
  • Experience with data and reporting (both quantitative and qualitative written reports).
  • Previous experience with academic advisement, particularly in STEM fields.
  • Previous professional experience in a tech field, preferably within or adjacent to NYC tech companies.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and experience or ability to quickly learn appropriate advisement and registration tools.
  • Occasional weekend availability.

  • Offers comprehensive advisement to full-time and part-time students
  • Works with other academic affairs staff as well as enrollment and student affairs to assist students to declare majors and select appropriate courses
  • Monitors students’ performances and takes appropriate action if necessary; resolves students’ problems regarding curricular requirements
  • Develops academic plans and performs graduation audits
  • Provides information to students regarding student support services, college policies and program procedures and guidelines
  • Facilitates workshops; assists with other department activities such as course scheduling
  • Establishes and maintains student advisement files; prepares activity reports and analyses
  • May supervise extramural activities, such as internships and community service; may assist with accreditation efforts as needed
  • May provide career and transfer services and/or specialized program counseling
  • May supervise junior advising and/or clerical staff
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

$68,004 – $72,667. Salary commensurate with education and experience.
