General Statement | Founded in 1893 as a Land-grant institution, Montana State University (MSU) is composed of nine academic colleges and a graduate school and boasts a friendly, supportive faculty and campus environment. MSU is the largest university in Montana, as well as the largest land-grant institution in the surrounding states, offering more than 190 baccalaureates, graduate certificates, master’s, and doctoral degree programs. The University’s annual budget exceeds $560 million, with more than 1,110 faculty members, 2,200 staff members, and nearly 17,000 students, including over 2,000 graduate students, who represent all 50 states and 71 countries. MSU is one of only 146 institutions in the U.S. to receive an R1 designation for its very high research activity by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Reporting to the President, the VP will lead with integrity, enthusiasm, and dedication to service excellence in a highly collaborative manner with constituencies at all levels of the institution. The units reporting to Student Success work to foster a holistic collegiate experience for the students at Montana State University in ways that improve student retention to graduation and support student mental health and wellbeing. Each department supports students in their academic goals and personal journeys while they work to become graduates of Montana State University. In support of the MSU mission, Student Success aims to enhance the learning environment of the University; support students in the attainment of their educational objectives; foster in students a sense of responsibility, self-directedness, community, and a positive identity with Montana State University.
