Who is Saint Louis University? Founded in 1818, Saint Louis University is one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious Catholic universities. SLU, which also has a campus in Madrid, Spain, is recognized for world-class academics, life-changing research, compassionate health care, and a strong commitment to faith and service.
All About You
The Catholic Studies Center at Saint Louis University invites applications, especially from scholars who have distinguished themselves as leaders in Catholic thought, in a national search for the inaugural holder of the Romano Guardini Chair in Catholic Thought and Culture. The appointment is for a tenured or tenure-track position in the College of Philosophy and Letters, with rank and tenure determined according to the policies of the College.
The establishment of the Guardini Chair advances SLU’s commitment to building one of the most vibrant centers of Catholic Studies in the country. It is named for Msgr. Romano Guardini (1885-1968), who is widely recognized as the “father” of Catholic Studies and a towering figure of Catholic culture in the 20th century: a friend and colleague of Pope John Paul II, mentor to Pope Benedict XVI, and favorite thinker of Pope Francis. This chair marks the first such position to be created in Guardini’s honor at a US university and sends a strong signal about SLU’s intention to foster Catholic engagement of culture in new and creative ways.
The holder of the Guardini Chair will be a distinguished professional academic who is conversant in and committed to the Catholic intellectual and cultural heritage and who has demonstrated excellence in introducing students to the ways in which this tradition engages the many dimensions of human life, including the lived experience of Catholicism in personal, family, and professional life. Reflecting SLU’s role as a leading Jesuit university, the Guardini Chair will have extensive familiarity with Jesuit history and spirituality and the role these play in the Church’s broader tradition of engaging thought and culture. The Guardini chair will also be engaged in original research in one or more of these areas.
The Guardini Chair will play an essential role in the life of the Catholic Studies Center with its integrated academic and co-curricular program. Teaching responsibilities include core courses for the Catholic Studies major and electives related to the candidate’s areas of expertise. The co-curricular program at the Catholic Studies Center includes a weekly night of Catholic cultural and spiritual formation as well as pilgrimages, retreats, liturgies, and popular devotions. We seek candidates capable of playing a leading role in this integration and help students develop a catholic vision of the whole. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in any field related to Catholic thought and culture.
