Job Overview
There is strong demand for English language learning in Vietnam, being driven by the countrys economic growth, increasing internationalisation and a government vision for the future which is predicated on significantly improving levels of English language proficiency.

As standards evolve, certifications like IELTS are also becoming essential for access to national and international study opportunities and qualifications and the wider employment market.

The British Councils teaching presence currently counts three locations in Ho Chi Minh City and four in Hanoi, but four new centres are slated for opening in 2023 as part of an ambitious project to very significantly expand our presence over the coming years to respond to market demand and opportunity.

This is creating opportunities for employment in ELT in a country which is a dynamic, diverse and exciting place to live and work.

You will join inMarch 2024 or May 2024and receive induction and orientation before being assigned a teaching schedule in one of our branches.

The teaching activity has a national management structure, with a Cluster Lead English supported by Two Cluster Academic Managers, Operations and other Business Support teams, 10 Senior Teachers and a similar number of Coordinators.

Teachers are usually assigned to work in one teaching location, although sometimes work in more than one location is required.

Teaching young learners (aged 5 to 17) represents over 70% of the activity nationally. The British Council currently delivers courses to around 4,500 young learners and 1,700 adults at any one time.

This is expected to grow substantially in the coming months and years, and the new centres will be dedicated mainly to young learner teaching.

New recruits will be joining a diverse international team of over 147 English teaching professionals supported by an extensive academic management team. The focus on professional development and effective teaching is strong, with a well-developed Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme, involving both in-service training and support to pursue externally delivered qualification courses.

Responsibilities & Main Duties

  • To plan, prepare and deliver effective English language teaching that meets the needs of different learner groups
  • To monitor progress and provide regular feedback to help manage learners performance throughout the course, and to actively promote learner autonomy
  • To contribute to the development, evaluation, and improvement of English language courses, materials and related services, in order to best meet learners needs
  • To complete teaching-related administrative tasks to specified standards
  • To actively engage in professional development and performance management systems and procedures to assure high standards in teaching and learning
  • To contribute positively to the British Councils reputation and position as a benchmark standard in best practice in the sector
  • To support marketing and promotional activities and to assist the teaching team in delivering excellent customer service
  • To ensure safeguarding standards are rigorously applied and upheld in line with applicable policy in the following areas:
    • Child protection
    • Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI)
    • Health and safety

Qualification

Essentials

  • Undergraduate degree (BA or equivalent / higher)
  • Cambridge CELTA, Trinity CertTESOL or equivalent recognised entry-level qualification to teach English as a Foreign/Second Language
  • CELT-YL extension/TYLEC or commit to complete these courses while in post.
  • For Vietnamese nationals only: A BA or equivalent/ higher in ESL or related field

Desirables

  • PGCE in Primary/Secondary or equivalent
  • Recognised diploma in EFL i.e. Cambridge DELTA/Trinity DipTESOL
  • CELT-YL extension/TYLEC

Work Experience

Essential

  • At least 1-year post-qualification experience (600 hours) covering at least two of the following age-groups
    • Young learners aged 6 to 10
    • Young learners aged 11 to 13
    • Young learners aged 14 to 17

Desirables

  • Experience of IELTS or Cambridge Exams Preparation
  • Experience in teaching Adults (500+ hours)
  • At least 600 hours experience in teaching two or more young learners age groups

Language Requirements

  • Full proficiency in English across all 4 skills, equivalent to CEFR C2 / IELTS Band 8/9 in each of 4 sections of the academic module
  • IELTS test report is a mandatory requirement except following nationalities: British, American, Irish, Canadian, New Zealander,Australian (plus South African and Filipino if working in Hochiminh)

Salary & Benefits

  • Salary:VND 34,922,500 to VND 38,357,500 gross per month, on the Part-Time Teacher salary scale. The salary quoted is the minimum base salary for 50 hours of teaching per month. Hours taught above this are paid additionally at the applicable hourly rate.
  • Location:Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City.(Please state city preference in your application)
  • Annual Leave:12 working days per annum plus Vietnamese public holidays (currently 11 days per year).
  • Reimbursable travel expenses if you are recruited from outside Vietnam: For employees taking up a part-time teaching role joining from outside Vietnam, any expenses incurred relating to travel to Vietnam, including airfare, baggage or temporary accommodation on arrival will be reimbursed against receipts up to a permissible allowance limit of USD1,500.

  • Passport requirements/ Right to work in country:Applicants must be potentially eligible to work in Vietnam and must hold a passport which has at least two blank pages and at least 6 months remaining validity.
  • Vaccination Status– Need proof of double-vaccination to be eligible for Vietnamese work permit
  • Work schedule (as per operational needs): Teaching schedules typically involve both evening work and working on Saturdays and Sundays the times at which most teaching activity takes place. Teachers may be required to work in one or more centres in the city they are based in, but scheduling policy is to restrict teaching to one location only on any given day. Schedules are subject to change periodically, but advance notice is given.
    • Part-time teachers are required to make themselves available to teach at least the monthly number of hours specified in their contract according to the schedule given. Should operational needs require, teacher may be asked to carry out teaching-related non-teaching tasks in lieu of teaching (e.g. developing teaching materials, administrative tasks etc.) as part of their scheduled hours. Part-time teachers may be offered more hours of teaching than in their core contract. If they accept, they will be paid additionally for these hours.
