Admissions Counselor
Undergraduate Admission
Location: New Orleans, LA
Summary
The Admission Counselor is the primary contact person between the prospective student and secondary school communities and Tulane University. The counselor makes frequent public presentations to these groups describing Tulane University, its programs, and its services. Admission Counselors conduct individual interviews with high school guidance counselors as well as prospective students and their families.
An Admission Counselor at Tulane University is expected to independently research, plan, coordinate, schedule, execute, and evaluate high school visitation and recruitment programs in areas assigned by the Assistant Vice President for Recruitment, seeking guidance only when necessary. Each Admission Counselor also assists with a number of special projects. These tasks may include: creating and designing publications, editing and producing multimedia presentations, planning special events both on and off campus, coordinating the activities of alumni, parents, and current students involved in the recruitment effort, serving as a liaison with several University departments and/or college Deans offices, serving on University committees, supervising operations staff and student workers on specific projects, conducting market research, or managing project-specific budgets.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong organizational and analytical skills and excellent attention to detail.
- Superior interpersonal and public speaking skills.
- Highly developed written and oral communication skills. Capable of presenting Tulane University in a favorable light with individuals, small groups and large groups. Ability to resolve the inevitable conflicts between the families of prospective students and Tulane University which arise as part of the admission process of a highly competitive institution.
- An appreciation for the cyclical nature of admission work and the flexibility to handle a variety of duties and projects throughout the day as well as throughout the year.
- Computer literacy is important to the efficient management of a quantity of work.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies, including faculty, academic deans and senior administrators, admission staff members, students, parents, guidance counselors and alumni.
- Because of the wide range of duties and responsibilities associated with this position, an Admission Counselor must develop and possess:
- A complete understanding of the admission and recruitment policies of Tulane University.
- A detailed knowledge of undergraduate academic programs offered by Tulane University.
- An in-depth knowledge of the policies and procedures governing the distribution of student financial aid.
- Broad-based knowledge of student activities, residential life, athletic programs, learning support services, and other extra-academic programs and services provided by Tulane University.
- Familiarity with New Orleans, the culture of Southern Louisiana, and local customs and history.
- Familiarity with educational records including high school transcripts and evaluation systems, standardized test scores, international educational records, and college transcripts.
Required Education and/or Experience
- Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
