Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) School of Social Work is seeking an
Associate Dean for External Affairs. The position of
Associate Dean for External Affairs is responsible for overseeing
and managing the external relations and strategic partnerships for
the UMB School of Social Work. The ideal candidate will work
directly with the Dean on principal and major gift efforts and will
work with all levels of our development staff to integrate and
expand programs for principal gifts, major/planned gifts, special
gifts, annual gifts, and cultivation activities into a cohesive
plan to achieve stated objectives. Included with development
responsibilities, this position will also oversee and manage the
School’s external and internal communication efforts. You will be a

Willingness to travel and work on a flexible time schedule
including some evening and weekend hours. Travel outside of the DMV
area will be required. This position is eligible for the staff
hybrid work program.
As our Associate Dean for External Affairs, you will become a force
for change and transformation as you guide the School of Social
Work to raise funds and communicate our successes to ensure the
next generation of Social Workers benefit from the legacy that is
uniquely and distinctly UMSSW. This person will engage and enhance
connections with highly involved and welcoming alumni and will
oversee the entire range of external affairs activities related to
established priorities for the School of Social Work research,
teaching, and service missions.
Your work in partnership with strong, supportive leadership, highly
collaborative colleagues and motivated staff will make a
significant impact on our ability to meet and exceed the overall
fundraising goals and priorities of the UMB School of Social Work.
You will design, implement, and manage a comprehensive program to
secure private support from individuals, corporations, and
foundations and play a vital role in building and maintaining
strong relationships with various external stakeholders, including
government agencies, industry partners, community organizations,
alumni, donors, and the public.

Essential
Functions
-
Develops and implements
an external relations strategy for the School of Social Work,
identifying key stakeholders, understanding their needs and
expectations, and creating effective communication plans.
Fosters partnerships,
collaborations, and support through attending events and
conferences.
Oversees the school’s
communication strategy, including advertising, image building,
branding, and developing materials for internal and external
distribution.
Manages media relations,
press releases, and public statements to promote achievements,
initiatives, and events.
Assists the Dean in
facilitating philanthropic opportunities with individuals and
external partners by developing and maintaining relationships with
key donors, through arranging meetings, assisting in solicitations,
and developing correspondence.
Tracks philanthropic
revenue for the school and ensures it is being used effectively to
support School programs, scholarships, and other initiatives.
Advises on the
development of new revenue streams with internal and external
partners.
Serves as a liaison
between the institution and government agencies, local community
organizations, and other external entities.
Oversees the planning,
organization, and execution of events, such as conferences,
workshops, seminars, and networking events, that aim to engage
external stakeholders and promote the institution’s
visibility.
Tracks and analyzes the
effectiveness of external relations activities, generate reports,
and provide insights and recommendations for improvement. Use data
and feedback to refine strategies and enhance engagement with
stakeholders.
Supports staff, providing
guidance, mentorship, and performance evaluations.
Minimum
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree in a relevant
field (such as higher education administration, public relations,
or business administration).
Experience: Ten (10) years of demonstrated
excellent leadership experience in managing a comprehensive and
complex advancement program emphasizing principal gift, major gift
and annual giving or a comparable program emphasizing solicitations
similar in nature, level and complexity within a higher education
institution or a similar setting.
Supervisory: Seven (7) years of supervisory or
managerial experience in Development / Fundraising involving
financial and budgetary accountability with strong management and
supervisory skills to oversee and evaluate the efforts of
fundraising and communications professionals, support staff, and
volunteers.
Other: Financial disclosure reporting required by
State of Maryland Ethics Commission. Serves at the pleasure of the
Dean.

The Hiring Range for this position is in the mid
$170,000s to mid $190,000s, commensurate with education and
experience.
