Scope of Position: The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center’s mission is to improve health in Ohio and across the world through innovation in research, education, and patient care. The team provides patient care and supportive services directed towards achievement of positive patient care outcomes, maximizing the patient’s involvement in his/her own plan of care and  reducing the length of hospitalization, The staff nurse plays a critical role in staff engagement , the patient experience, quality and safety, and cost effective care.

Position Summary: The Staff Nurse is responsible for managing and providing care to the patient and his/her family, and for directing and supervising nursing care provided by other members of the patient care team. The Staff Nurse is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, coordinating, delegating and evaluating the nursing care of patients in alignment with the professional practice model. 

95% Duties and Responsibilities:

Health Care Delivery: Participates in our innovative healthcare delivery model that delivers high value care with                                                  unparalleled patient experience.

  • Applies the nursing process to all areas of practice
  • Establishes a patient plan of care; provides patient education related to patient’s condition, therapeutic regimen and self-care measures; evaluates effectiveness of patient education
  • Provides care according to patient needs; performs specialized nursing care procedures as outlined in department/unit specific competency profiles
  • Provides discharge planning that begins on admission according to patient need; coordinates patient care, admissions, transfers and discharges.  Matching nurses with specific skills to patients with specific needs.
  • Provides interdisciplinary communication to enhance the patient plan of care
  • Enhances patient experience with high value care
  • Actively participates in performance improvement initiatives positively affecting quality and safety
  • Responds to urgent situations and assumes an active role to enhance emergency care needed for positive patient outcomes
  • Adheres to regulatory compliance standards

Minimum Qualifications

For Hire:  Degree in Nursing from a CCNE (Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education) or Accreditation

    Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) accredited nursing program required. 

    Current Ohio license or interim permit. *Experience in relevant care setting preferred.

On-going:  Maintains current Ohio RN license. Meets mandatory educational and health requirements.  Demonstrates

      computer skills required to meet job functions.

 Contacts/Customers:  Patients and family, all members of the health care team.

Physical/Visual/Mental Requirements

  • Transport/ move patients in order to provide care,
  • Move objects weighing up to 40 pounds around the work environment in order to provide care (does not include patient movement or transfers)
  • Provide care, perform necessary duties and maintain patient safety in the patient care environment,
  • Set up/ adjust various patient equipment items in use at the Medical Center, and
  • Communicate clearly in order to facilitate the patient’s plan of care.

Work Environment

  • The work environment involves risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, additional safety education and/or health risk monitoring, e.g. chemicals, radiation, working with sharps (needles, syringes, scalpels), infectious diseases.  Employees may be required to use protective clothing or gear such as masks, gowns, goggles, gloves, etc.
  • The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which requires normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices and meeting rooms (i.e. use of safe work practices, avoidance of trips and falls, and observance of fire regulations and traffic signs).
  • The work environment involves risks associated with the use of computers such as eye strain and disorders that result from repetitive motions associated with computer use.
