Department Summary

The Knight Campus for Accelerating Scientific Impact is a billion-dollar initiative designed to fast-track scientific discoveries and the process of turning those discoveries into innovations that improve the quality of life for people in Oregon, the nation and beyond. The Knight Campus will reshape the higher education landscape in Oregon by training the next generations of scientists, forging tighter ties with industry and entrepreneurs, and creating new educational opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students.

The Knight Campus Business Operations and Administration Team (BOAT) operates as a hub of experts who provide high-quality, exceptional business operations and administrative services to all units and programs in the Knight Campus. Service areas include full-cycle activities in human resources operations, financial operations, research administration/operations, academic administration/operations, and general business operations. The BOAT provides business services to all Knight Campus units, which are growing remarkably as we scale up to achieve our mission of science advancing society with a vision to dramatically shorten the timeline between discovery and societal impact through world-class research, training, and entrepreneurship.

Position Summary

The Knight Campus seeks a detail oriented, adaptable, organized, and communicative individual to provide high-level financial management for the Knight Campus including our research, academic, and innovation programs.

The Finance Manager will be responsible for a broad set of assignments related to the Knight Campus portfolio. This position provides senior management with critical information, recommendations, and trends in support of executive decisions. The Finance Manager provides fiscal operations expertise to the Knight Campus and serves as the senior financial resource and expert on the Business Operations and Administration Team (BOAT). The Finance Manager completes their work across a sophisticated fund accounting structure consisting of auxiliaries and a significant number of fund types making full, consistent, and accurate use of university accounting policies and regulations, GAAP, and sponsored project funding functions. The individual in this position is a principal liaison to the central UO Budget and Resource Planning (BRP) and UO Business Affairs Office (BAO), and to other financial managers across campus, and has primary responsibility over all budget adjustments and unit capital expenditure tracking. The Finance Manager provides comprehensive budgetary reporting and analysis to administration, research, and academic units across the organization, frequently and independently interacting with senior management and program directors. In addition, the individual in this position participates in multiple university procedure development groups, such as the University Budget Managers group and the IDR/Cognos Report working group.

The Finance Manager has unit-level budget authority, managing the full Knight Campus financial portfolio including an annual operating budget of $25M+, major UO Foundation funds (spendable and endowed) with annual income of $100M+, and major capital project allocations. This position also regularly interacts with university senior-level management, as well as with external state and federal agencies on behalf of the Assistant Vice President. The Finance Manager makes frequent independent decisions in support of senior management decisions. Information and provided analysis must be accurate, timely, and appropriate always. Ad Hoc priority requests frequently need to be independently vetted, prioritized, and triaged. Work is largely independent with frequent direct responses to senior management and executives in various parts of the university. Guidelines and procedures are overseen by the AVP, University Policy and State and Federal regulations. This position may supervise additional support staff based on workload.

This position will report directly to the Assistant Vice President, Business Operations and Administration, and will be an essential role on a growing team. The Finance Manager will be a crucial element of the support structure that is necessary for the billion-dollar academic, research, and innovation enterprise of the Knight Campus to thrive and succeed.

Minimum Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in finance, Accounting or a related financial field.
• Five years of experience in financial management and analysis.
• Five years of experience in accounting.
• Three years of experience managing a complex budget with multiple revenue streams or funding sources and multiple supported operations.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Business, Finance, Accounting or a closely-related field.
• CPA or PA certificate.
• Experience managing multiple budgets in a higher education environment.
• Experience with Cognos, BANNER and/or similar information system.
• Experience providing professional presentations, memos, and communications.
