We are Forestry England. We are the country’s largest land manager, caring for the nation’s
forests for people, nature and the economy. The foundation of our organisation is our
world-class sustainable management of the nation’s forests.
Forestry England is an organisation like no other. Our strong values and shared ambition to
connect everyone with the nation’s forests, drives all that we do.
Our four values capture how we work:
- Think beyond a lifetime – We make plans today for a better tomorrow, so our business and
our forests are sustainable and fit for the future. - Be adventurous – We approach challenges with creativity and adventure, embracing research
and innovation to stay relevant. - Do it together – We get our best results when we work with others, and we encourage diverse
perspectives, so we make better decisions. - Look out and look after – We care about our colleagues, volunteers, partners, and
customers, and we take a stand against unsafe behaviour.
Our South England Forest District team is made up of around 160 people. Our team contains a
diverse range of roles – from wildlife rangers to civil engineers, and ecologists to marketing
professionals, we all contribute towards the management of some 46,000 hectares of public
forest estate and national parks that stretch from Sussex to Dorset, and from Berkshire to the
Isle of Wight. Much of this forest is of high national importance for nature conservation and
wildlife, and of international importance for biodiversity.
The South District Permissions Team play a key role within Forestry England in processing over
2000 activity permissions a year.
The Activities and Permissions Manager will work closely with a wide range of external
stakeholders and partners whilst consulting with internal colleagues. A significant focus is
spent with event organisers from a wide range of backgrounds and scales, from ecological
surveys, bee keeping through to marathons with 5000 runners. Emphasis is growing in key areas
including supporting health and wellbeing outcomes for participants whilst also enabling more
robust monitoring and survey work to protect our most sensitive habitats.
The Activities and Permissions Manager will lead the Team to:
- Champion sustainable recreation through the delivery of the diverse range of permitted
activities across the South of England - Coordinate with event organisers and stakeholders to promote benefits of being in nature,
resulting in sustainable compliant delivery. - Manage and support the Permissions Team to deliver permitted activities across our Estate.
- Work with ecology and local teams to ensure legal compliance across designated landscapes.
- Lead on South Districts response to the new Customer Relations system change project
focused on business resilience and efficient ways of working. - Undertake financial reviews and reporting.
- Expect to undertake regular travel across the district and be available for occasional
evening and weekend support.
