Oslo University Hospital (OUS) is Norway’s largest hospital with over 20 000 employees and a budget of 20 billion NOK. It is a local hospital for parts of Oslo’s population. It has a regional function for the inhabitants in the South-Eastern Norway Regional Health Authority, in addition to a large number of national functions. The Hospital is responsible for the majority of medical research and education of health personnel in Norway.

The University of Oslo (UiO) is Norway’s oldest and highest ranked research and educational institution with 28 000 students and 7 000 employees. Professional breadth and internationally recognized research environments make UiO an important contributor to society. The Faculty of Medicine was established in 1814 and is Norway’s oldest medical faculty. The Faculty works for progressive education, research and dissemination for the patients’ and society’s best interests. It is organized into three basic units and has approximately 1 500 employees and about 2 000 students.

A permanent position as Researcher/Senior Researcher is available at Institute for Experimental Medical Research, Oslo University Hospital. The position is affiliated with a part time position as Associate Professor SKO 1011 (20 % position) or Professor (SKO 1013) in Translational Cardiology at the Institute of Clinical Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Oslo (UiO). It is required that the position holder attends to both positions.

Regarding the full-time clinical position at OUS:

The Institute for Experimental Medical Research (IEMR), centrally and idyllically located in Oslo, is Norway`s largest Institute for translational cardiovascular research. Our vision is to understand the heart for the benefit of patients. We work closely with clinical departments at Oslo University Hospital (OUS) and are part of the University of Oslo (UiO). More than 60 scientists organized in six research groups are associated with IEMR, with close interaction between physicians, molecular biologists, physiologists, engineers, bioengineers, physicists and mathematicians. Our highly competent technical staff, as well as world-class infrastructure and animal facilities, ensures the best environment for excellent research.

About the position

  • The position is intended for a highly independent researcher who is expected to set up a research group at IEMR, and contribute to teaching and excisiting networks, as wells as to contribute to the scientific culture and social working environment.
  • The research focus of the new group must be aligned with the overall scientific strategy of IEMR. This means that the new group should initiate projects to achieve one or more of IEMRs main scientific goals:
    • Improve diagnostics, prevention, and treatment of the stiff heart through basic, translational and clinical studies.
    • Reveal integrative mechanisms for heart failure and arrhythmias, as a basis for understanding and treatment of electromechanical dysfunction in patients.
    • Reveal cellular signaling pathways responsible for cardiac mechanosensing, and remodeling as a basis for future therapy.
  • IEMR has a translational approach to cardiac research, and the new group leader is expected to interact with academic and technical staff with a broad range of different backgrounds at IEMR and in external collaborations and networks.
  • We use a wide spectrum of methods and technologies, from molecular investigations, via cell cultures and animal studies to patients studies. The new group leader is expected to contribute to further development of methods and technologies in close interaction with all staff at IEMR.
  • IEMR is active in teaching of medical students, PhD students and clinical staff, and importantly contribute in administrative and strategic fora at the Hospital and the University. A new group leader is expected to take on such tasks in close collaboration with the Head of Department.

Qualification requirements

  1. We are looking for candidates who hold a PhD in life sciences, natural sciences or medicine, with an excellent track record in cardiac research.
  2. The candidate must have proven track record as an independent researcher with ability to conceive, initiate, fund and conduct research projects at the highest international level.
  3. Scientific and/or methodological expertise relevant to the research strategy of IEMR is required.
  4. The working language is English, and excellent knowledge of spoken and written English is required. Candidates without competency in Norwegian are expected to acquire such competency in the first few years of employment.
