Offer Description

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral astrophysics position, to work on the exploration and analysis of galaxy surveys. The researcher will work with data from a large-area narrow-band survey, S-PLUS inside an international collaboration involving Brazil, Argentina and Chile. The researcher will also participate in the effort to combine S-PLUS with other large astrophysical surveys, depending on the interest of the postdoc, aiming to make breakthroughs in any area of knowledge. Links with future surveys or including science to be done with the mega telescopes of the next decade, such as GMT, are highly welcome.

The position is available immediately and the appointment is for 2 years in total, with the possibility of extension. The starting date is negotiable, with a preference for the next months. The primary location of this position is at the University of São Paulo (USP) and includes the possibility of a 3-month period to be spent abroad. The monthly salaries are R$ 9.047,40 in Brazil and about EUR 3,000 abroad (both tax-free). The position comes with a monthly stipend to cover computer needs, publication costs, conference participation, etc.

At USP, the post-doctoral researcher will work in close collaboration with Claudia Mendes de Oliveira and Laerte Sodré Jr. and their respective groups as well as other members of the S-PLUS collaboration. The applicant will have access to high-performance computer clusters as well as a travel grant.

USP is the largest Brazilian center for astrophysics and cosmology, with researchers both in the Physics and Astronomy Departments, and groups working on a wide range of topics from cosmology, large-scale structure, advanced statistical methods, as well as galaxy evolution and machine learning techniques. There will be extensive opportunities for independent research and collaboration, including the option to supervise undergraduate as well as graduate students.

We are looking for applicants with experience in extragalactic astrophysics but all areas of knowledge are welcome. Applications should be sent to Jose Godoy at [email protected]  and they should include a brief summary of previous research and a statement of current and future research interests, possibly involving S-PLUS and other surveys (4 pages max), a curriculum vitae and a list of publications. In addition, the names and email addresses of two to three letter writers should be provided. Those will be contacted if the applicant is selected for an interview. Depending on funding becoming available, more than one position may be open. Applications will be reviewed starting on February 14.
