Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego is one of the most important centers for global earth science research and education in the world. Scripps scientists work to understand and protect the planet by investigating our oceans, Earth, and atmosphere to find solutions to our greatest environmental challenges. Scripps leads research in climate change impacts and adaptation, resilience to hazards, conservation and biodiversity, oceans and human health, national security, and innovative technology to observe the planet.
Research in the Geosciences Research Division (GRD) embraces atmospheric, marine and solid earth chemistry, cosmochemistry, paleoceanography and paleoclimate, stratigraphy, geobiology and paleoecology, hydrogeology, global and regional tectonics, and paleomagnetism. GRD is home to 38 academics in various titles (Professor, Research Professor, Research Scientist, Project Scientist and Specialist), 10 Research Associates and Visiting Scholars, 10 Postdoctoral Scholars, 45 graduate students and 45 staff. GRD expends approximately $10 million annually in federal, state and private funds.
The role of the Geological Data Center at Scripps Institution of Oceanography is to archive and provide access to oceanographic data, particularly from SIO vessels. The GDC has been in operation for more than 40 years. While historic physical artifact are curated, the current emphasis is on digital archiving, in coordination with other national and international programs.
This position at Scripps works as part of a multi-institution program managing and ensuring preservation of data from the fleet of U.S. academic research vessels. The work includes managing and processing shipboard data, and modifying/revising the PHP and Python data processing code as needed for new data formats; converting existing PHP code to Python; transferring data, and preparing data for submission to a national archive; and serving as liaison to vessel operators to update metadata about vessels, instruments inventories, and vessel file structures to ensure current information, including managing a PostgreSQL metadata database.
Must work effectively both individually and as part of a team, work with high attention to detail, communicate well with a broad spectrum of users, and manage multiple conflicting demands to meet deadlines.
Please note that this is a contract position for one (1) year initially.

Bachelor’s degree in a relevant major (Oceanography, Computer Science, Data Science Library Science, etc.) and/or equivalent experience/training.

Knowledge relating to the design and development of software. Basic knowledge of secure software development. Experience writing original code to process data and/or provide web access to data. Experience with PHP.

Demonstrated experience with database administration. Knowledge of relational databases (e.g. PostgreSQL, MySQL), and basic SQL commands.

Knowledge of data management systems, practices and standards.

Experience with Unix-based systems and Unix commands, including basic shell scripting.

Demonstrated knowledge of computer security tools, best practices and policies. Demonstrated skills in applying security controls to computer software and hardware.

Demonstrated understanding of how system management actions affect users and dependent/related functions.

Interpersonal skills sufficient to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization. Ability to elicit and communicate technical and non-technical information in a clear and concise manner.

Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Demonstrates problem-solving skills. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.

Demonstrated ability to install software and troubleshoot and repair moderately complex problems with computing devices, peripherals and software. Understanding of system performance monitoring and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance. Basic knowledge of incident response procedures. Demonstrated ability to follow software specifications

General knowledge of several areas of IT.

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $67,200 – $119,600 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $32.18 – $57.28
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
