Job description
The post holder will be a key member of the research governance team for the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM), ensuring that the Trust meets its legal and regulatory obligations in relation to research.
The role will ensure the set up and delivery of research within SLaM, working with researchers, other research support departments and the Trust’s clinical services. This includes assessing the feasibility of studies, providing guidance on national systems, and ensuring that approval and sponsorship processes are followed.
Working with the R&D Governance Manager the post-holder will play a key role in the development, implementation, and maintenance of research governance systems to ensure the highest quality standards of health research within SLaM. This senior post will also manage the day-to-day work of the R&D Governance Facilitators. The post holder will be responsible for the design and delivery and of the Trust research governance audit programme and play a leading role in the development of research governance standard operating procedures (SOPs).
This post will be offered on a full-time, indefinite contract.
Key responsibilities
- Develop and maintain an up-to-date understanding of research legislation and guidance including the UK Policy Framework for Health and Social Care Research, Health Research Authority, General Data Protection Regulation, the Medicines for Human Use (Clinical Trials) Regulations, Mental Capacity Act and Human Tissue Act.
- Support researchers in navigating national health research approval processes and systems
- Oversee research governance, facilitation, and sponsorship assessment processes for individual research studies by leading the team of R&D Governance Facilitators. This includes identifying remedial actions to resolve issues that may delay the progress of timely set up and recruitment for a study.
- Accurately record research information on the R&D office systems, including access databases and excel spreadsheets.
- Attend and contribute to internal and external meetings on behalf of the R&D office and effectively communicate information to all staff involved with R&D processes.
- Develop and deliver a programme of research governance audit and monitoring for studies where SLaM has sponsorship responsibility.
- Coordinate the development of a suite of research governance SOPs.
- Prepare and deliver formal presentations/training sessions at a local level for researchers and other research professionals as required.
- Provide cover for other members of the R&D team as required.
- Attend relevant research training and continuing professional development activities to ensure that work delivered remains effective, relevant, and up to date.
- Any other duties appropriate to the grade as directed.

Essential criteria

2. Knowledge of research governance requirements and the relevant guidance and legislative framework that underpins NHS research
3. Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)

6. Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
