Named for the late Nobel and Turing Award laureate and CMU Professor Herbert A. Simon, the Simon Initiative harnesses a cross-disciplinary learning engineering ecosystem that has developed over several decades at Carnegie Mellon. The initiative’s goal is to measurably improve student learning outcomes. We’re currently seeking an Outreach and Communication Specialist to join the team.

Your core responsibilities will include:

Project Baseplate Administration and Support (40%)

  • Support site-based facilitation with partnering Brick Clubs including observations and quality control, site visits, and supplies management.
  • Develop and maintain virtual community support networks (may include Discord, Digital Promise, Facebook groups, etc.) for participating and interested Brick Clubs
  • Establishing a live asset map / distributional channel for supplies, create materials that support groups determining appropriate LEGO products for their environment.
  • Responsible for creating and executing data gathering systems that support the work of the LGC, Simon Initiative, and CTP and their active projects. This may include survey creation and distribution, database creation and management, and on-going project evaluation.
  • Create and curate a media archive (videos, photos, etc.) of on-going projects and maintain accurate and complete release records.

Simon Initiative + Research Communication (40%)

  • Develop content and communications materials to raise the visibility of the CMU research enterprise internally and externally.
  • Collaborate with partners in colleges to communicate about prioritized CMU initiatives.
  • Write research stories for the CMU homepage and other websites and publications.
  • Work closely with senior staff to develop key messages and strategic communications.
  • Manage initiative websites, social media, and email strategies.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with faculty and staff, and university communicators.

K-12 Engagement Network Initiative Support (20%)

  • Develop materials to support distribution and dissemination of best practices and information about CMU K-12 resources (ex. Project Baseplate, Simon Initiative research, and LGC program opportunities)
  • Maintain database of regional K-12 contacts and communicate with network via outreach channels.
  • Provide customer support to incoming requests for K-12 engagement from regional stakeholders.
  • Support programming initiatives from LGC, CTP, Simon, Project Baseplate, and the K-12 engagement network
  • Provide event support (logistics, ordering, space reservation) for on and off campus K-12 engagement network events.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with faculty, staff, and students engaged in K-12 outreach initiatives.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 1-3 years of educational marking and outreach experience. 
  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
