Under general supervision, Research Technologist performs clinical and/or research laboratory experiments by following established procedures and protocols with instruction. Uses science knowledge to learn techniques/methods of the lab. Runs lab tests and completes measurements as assigned. Identifies and resolves common problems and uses analytical skills to implement assigned projects. Understands the role of senior lab members and accepts constructive guidance. Sets-up experiments based on defined standards. Collects and maintains project data.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Follows routine protocols under the supervision and mentorship of a faculty investigator and laboratory manager.
  • Performs research studies and/or experiments following established procedures or protocols, which may include image analysis, performing immunohistochemistry procedures and assisting with other slide-based studies.
  • Operates requisite laboratory equipment and instruments, records data, and perform laboratory tests, making minor adjustments as required.
  • Handles slides and blocks appropriately, including requests from archives and receiving and organizing materials from outside institutions.
  • Monitors inventory levels and orders materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures as required for experimental protocols.
  • May participate in planning experiments and evaluating/interpreting test results utilizing detailed knowledge of research laboratory procedures and practices.
  • Uses universal safety precautions to protect self and co-workers from biohazardous materials, including blood-borne pathogens. Complies with biohazard/radiation safety standards through proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents and/or radiation sources. Completes annual university biohazard/universal precaution/radiation safety training, as appropriate, as well as other required online and in-person trainings and compliance requirements.
  • Monitors equipment performance and maintenance schedules. May perform routine repair or replacement of standard parts.
  • Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry or related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
