Directs Auburn University Risk Management & Safety projects and initiatives by providing strategic direction and oversight that impact the department and the university community. In collaboration with leadership, develops and executes critical initiatives contributing to goals of the department. Collaborates with leadership to advance the department’s strategic plan and assessment and ensure University’s strategic plan.

Essential Functions 1. Under the direction of the Executive Director, develops and oversees key initiatives and special projects strategy within Risk Management & Safety department in alignment with departmental and university objectives and strategic plans.
2. Works with department leadership to develop, implement, and maintain individual initiative/project objectives and short- and long-range plans from start to finish. Provides support and guidance to department leadership regarding the management and coordination of strategic initiatives and special projects. Serve program areas on a consultative basis to evaluate and assess current programs, tasks, initiatives, projects, or areas of need. Collaborate and partner with program leadership to develop effective plans and strategies to advance these areas as needed.
3. Directs assigned major department initiatives/projects and ensures they are generally cohesive, consistent, and effective in supporting department and university missions, goals, and strategic plans. Develops and establishes policies, strategies, and operating objectives to ensure efficient and effective implementation of major initiatives/projects and/or projects tied to department or strategic institutional priorities.
4. Prepares plans that detail the steps, timeline and resources needed to accomplish specific initiatives/projects. Identifies initiative/project goals, objectives, and key performance indicators (KPIs) in collaboration with department staff and key stakeholders. Ensures that planning moves from a high strategic level down to an operational level so that department staff and key stakeholders understand how the planning impacts them and they know what is expected to move initiatives and projects forward.
5. Prepares and delivers quarterly and annual updates on initiatives/projects status to the Executive Director to demonstrate meaningful progress on planning and meaningful value to department staff and key stakeholders.
6. Monitors and tracks project progress of department strategic and assessment plans and develops tracking and evaluation programs to assist in the accomplishment of established goals and objectives. Evaluate project performance and identify areas for improvement, implementing corrective actions as needed. Prepare reports, presentations, and documentation to communicate project progress, outcomes, and impact to internal and external stakeholders. Gathers, organizes, and assesses data and/or information to promote informed decision making.
7. Collaborates and serves as a liaison with departmental staff and key stakeholders to operationalize and coordinate projects based on the prescribed timeline. Fosters effective communication and collaboration among team members and stakeholders to ensure project success. Develops trusted relationships with departmental staff and key stakeholders, and ensures that they are kept appropriately informed of project activities and are encouraged to participate as appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications Education:
Bachelor’s Degree, desired fields Risk Management, Insurance, Law, Safety, Environmental Science, Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Biological Sciences, Engineering, chemistry or related field.
Experience:
8 years of experience in risk management and insurance, and safety regulatory compliance enforcement and business management including budgeting and personnel management.
Substitutions allowed for Experience:
When a candidate has the required education, but lacks the required experience, they may normally apply additional appropriate education toward the experience requirement, at a rate of one (1) year relevant education per year of required experience.

Minimum Skills, License, and Certifications

  • Intermediate to advanced experience using Microsoft Office required, along with specialized computer applications.
  • Must be able to effectively interact with colleagues at all operational levels.
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work independently.
  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and organizational skills.
  • Proven, successful project management experience. Strong interpersonal and communication skills essential.
Minimum Technology Skills
Minimum License and Certifications Certified by the Associate in Risk Management (ARM) or Certified Risk Manager (CRM), or Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU). Graduate degree in risk management/insurance or a Juris Doctor (JD) may substitute for certifications.

  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills, and proven ability to communicate in a clear, consistent, transparent manner to foster understanding and create shared goals.
  • Experience in leading multiple challenging projects from start to finish, applying policies and procedures, writing technical documents and reports, and at assembling, organizing, and conceptualizing numerical data in spreadsheets, databases, reports, and presentations.
  • Demonstrated experience developing communication plans, instructional materials and related content, and with conducting in-person meetings.
  • Leadership skills, with the ability to manage, balance, and prioritize different tasks and projects for various projects. Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
