Main purpose of job:
This job offers the successful candidate an opportunity to work in the high-performing Department of Business & Trade (DBT) team at the British Office Taipei.
DBT’s role is to promote UK’s business interests worldwide, and the job holder will contribute to the UK’s prosperity by assisting UK businesses wishing to export to and/or establish a presence in Taiwan.
The post advertised is for Senior Commercial Officer to support and progress existing HMG objectives in the region. The successful candidate will be joining a strong team in the British Office Taipei, which forms part of a regional team based in locations across Asia Pacific. The line manager for this role is based in the British Office Taipei.
The successful candidate will join the Department for Business & Trade team at the British Office Taipei, working closely with colleagues across the Office and in London to support UK exports to Taiwan in the security, aerospace and cyber sectors. This will be achieved through regular business development and stakeholder engagement activities including events, conferences and visits.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve? Working closely with colleagues in Whitehall and the APAC Region, the role holder will drive the growth of UK-Taiwan bilateral trade in sectors including security, aerospace, cyber and other sectors.

- BA/BS degree or higher
- Full professional proficiency in Mandarin Chinese and English, including excellent writing skills as well as experience in drafting engaging, speeches, articles and other forms.
- A proven track record of successful relationship management with internal and external stakeholders, including those at senior level.
- Strong events and project management skills and exceptional teamwork abilities.
- Strategic commercial and economic awareness.
- Ability to identify relevant market opportunities.
- Ability to adapt in a fast-paced and constantly changing environment.
- Ability to prioritise against competing, challenging tasks.
- Evidence of self-motivation, time management, and professionalism under minimal supervision.
- Experience in completing timely and accurate written information in English.
- Proactive, goal oriented and outgoing personality with strong commercial acumen.
- Good communicator at all levels, spoken and written.
- Ability and willingness to work additional hours in the evening (e.g. business networking, official visits), when necessary.
- Strong IT skills in MS Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Language requirements:
- English: Fluent (written and spoken)
- Mandarin Chinese: Fluent (written and spoken)
- Proven track record of business development and in delivering results.
- Basic understanding of the international trade, foreign direct investment and the business environment.
- Experience in project management, including managing budgets.
- Business Development, Sales or Marketing experience.
- Market research and analysis experience.
- Ability and willingness to travel within Taiwan, Asia Pacific and UK.
- Experience of navigating sensitive and complex issues with maturity and discretion.

The Senior Commercial Officer will gain a broad range of trade and investment experience which they can use to further progress their career within DBT.

The role will primarily involve engaging with stakeholders located in Taiwan and in the UK. Some of this communication can be done remotely so occasional WFH will be an option.
