The System Automations Engineer will report to the Sr. IT Manager, collaborations and communications, in the ISC Technology Services group. This role will provide critical support as a systems software developer for Linux- and Windows- based email services.
Job Description
Job Responsibilities
Systems Automation Engineer

  • Delivers solutions for the Penn Email routing infrastructure; this includes coding, testing, implementation and maintenance of system application software and associated middleware, associated middleware and API based access, in highly complex solutions.
  • Provide support to local service providers in schools and centers for the central Penn email service (PennO365), including mail delivery and sanitation services.
  • Assist in building and maintaining on-campus mail routing infrastructure which provides integration points with external vendors.
  • Assist in coordination of systems and services maintenance (upgrades, fixes, security patches) with central system support service teams; Assist with maintenance of existing mail routing infrastructure.
  • Deploy and maintain an enterprise class system software environment and can write scripts to automate, scale, and optimize workflows on it.
  • Support and enhance automation for systems integration, using both Linux based and Windows based scripting languages, such as Python, PowerShell and Ansible.
  • Ensures adherence of technical, quality assurance, data integrity and security standards.
  • Design, install, configure, and maintain a variety of system software such as OpenLDAP, REST APIs and their integration with the Penn central email infrastructure.
  • Maintains system applications and interfaces, either user created or third party systems software, such as LDAP, REST APIs and web servers.
  • Communicate regularly on status, progress to supervisors, project teams; maintain contact with key vendors.
  • Collaborate with staff from other ISC departments and with local support providers around campus and with peer institutions to maintain and improve the Collaborations and Communications service portfolio.

Systems Automation Engineer Senior

  • Provide critical support to local service providers in schools and centers for the central Penn email service (PennO365), including mail delivery and sanitation services. Provide third tier support to the PennO365 team as a systems software.
  • Design, build and upgrade on-campus mail routing infrastructure which provides integration points with external vendors. Develops, tests, and implements code to support and maintain system application software, associated middleware and API based access solutions.
  • Oversees project goals and timelines for the Penn Email routing infrastructure. Reviews the work of colleagues and provide feedback on efficiency, security, and other best practices.
  • Performs technical and functional analysis of information, processing and management systems; designs systems and identify interrelationships among systems.
  • Deploy and maintain an enterprise class system software environment and can write scripts to automate, scale, and optimize workflows on it.
  • Developing further automation for systems integration, using both Linux based and Windows based scripting languages, such as Python, PowerShell and Ansible.
  • Develops and implements security, maintenance, installation and optimization of system applications and interfaces, either user created or third party systems software, such as LDAP, REST APIs and web servers.
  • Provides oversight on systems and services maintenance (upgrades, fixes, security patches) with central system support service teams; Update and patch existing mail routing infrastructure; Develops on demand reports on system status, service health, and usage, using Python or PowerShell based scripting technologies.
  • Coordinate systems and services monitoring and maintenance; maintain existing systems, track service status.
  • Communicate regularly on status, progress to supervisors, project teams; maintain contact with key vendors. Write reports on findings;
  • Collaborate with staff from other ISC departments and with local support providers around campus and with peer institutions to maintain and improve the Collaborations and Communications service portfolio.

Qualifications
System Automation Engineer
Required

  • Bachelor of Science and 2 to 3 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • 2 to 3 years experience in a diverse IT environment with different systems and OSes, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with scripting languages and systems software implementation for both Linux and Windows based systems.
  • Hands on experience with using and implementing REST API based concepts.
  • Experience with Email protocols, Email flow and Email sanitation services or systems.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Customer focused and able to align client requirements with service offerings.

Preferred

  • Experience with either Python or PowerShell.
  • Experience with LDAP, AD, Postfix or Sendmail.
  • Understanding of systems automation with software such as Ansible.
  • Experience in a higher-ed or similar environment.
  • Able to analyze complex technical information.

System Automation Engineer Senior
Required

  • Bachelor of Science and 3 to 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • 3 to 5 years experience in a diverse IT environment with different systems and OSes, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Extensive experience with scripting languages and layered systems software implementation.
  • Experience with designing, using and implementing REST API based concepts.
  • Experience with layered software such as LDAP, AD, Postfix, Sendmail.
  • Full understanding of Email protocols, Email flow and Email sanitation services or systems.
  • Self-starter who can prioritize, organize, and complete multiple concurrent work assignments on schedule and with expected level of quality.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Customer focused and able to align client requirements with service offerings.
  • Able to analyze complex technical information and disseminate to a varied audience, including senior University leaders.

Preferred

  • Extensive experience with either Python or PowerShell.
  • Experience with LDAP, AD, Postfix or Sendmail.
  • Experience with using Ansible to build purpose-built systems.
  • Experience in a higher-ed or similar environment.
