Job Description:
The Group Exercise & Membership Specialist at the University of Albany is responsible for the administration and oversight of a comprehensive program of group exercise classes and membership services for the university community. They have the autonomy to analyze and resolve problems, determine appropriate action within their area of expertise, and supervise numerous undergraduate and graduate student assistants. They also provide recommendations for the development of staffing and equipment budgets, oversee the implementation and monitoring of budget, inventory, and other resources, and make recommendations for policy changes.
Primary Responsibilities:
- In conjunction with the Assistant Director, develop and oversee the department’s group exercise programs based on a comprehensive knowledge of national data, trends, and best practices, which meet the needs of our community.
- Recruit, hire, train, schedule, and actively mentor all Group Exercise instructors/trainers.
- Develop a GXIT program collaboratively with the Associate Director of Programming that encourages and incentivizes our GXIT certified instructors to become nationally certified through ACSM, ACE, AFAA, NSCA, NASM or comparable organizations.
- Aid the Assistant Director in the development, implementation, and monitoring of the Group Exercise staffing and equipment budgets.
- Provide leadership in the areas of student and recreational program development through the creation and implementation of continuing education, regular training sessions, and staff meetings for Group Exercise student staff.
- Evaluate, track, and compile statistical information for classes including daily, weekly, and semester measures.
- Review, evaluate, and recommend changes to the policies and procedures relating to the operations of Membership Services, with constant regard to the department’s strategic plan.
- Collect and compile monthly, quarterly, and annual operational and statistical data to determine and improve methods and procedures to better serve the department and campus community.
- Work with departmental staff to coordinate program needs to serve as the point of contact for members & participants.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Assists in establishing and implementing goals and objectives.
- Assists the in creating the department’s strategic plan.
- Interacts with Director and staff members regarding topics to help identify opportunities for improvement.
- Work with all Campus Recreation Programming professional staff members to actively communicate and market all programs through print media, electronic media, social media, special events and any other efforts deemed appropriate to effectively reach the University Community.
- Maintains a positive relationship with other personnel and departments that assist in the development of Campus Recreation programs, services, and facilities.
- Represents the Department of Campus Recreation and The University at Albany on various committees, boards, and associations.
- Interacts with students, faculty, and staff for the benefit of carrying out the mission of the department.
Reporting Relationships:
- One or two Graduate Assistants assigned to Group Exercise and Memberships
- 40 Student Staff assigned to Group Exercise
- 15 Student Staff assigned to Memberships
Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree from an accredited institution in Sports Administration, Recreation, Athletic/Recreation Administration, Physical Education, Exercise Science, Public Health, Sports Management or related field.
- One or more years of relevant experience in fitness, group exercise, community based programming.
- Demonstrated ability or willingness to supervise staff.
- Ability to work both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Applicants must address their ability to obtain a Group Exercise certification within the first year of employment.
- Applicants must demonstrate an ability to develop inclusive and equitable relationships within our diverse campus community.
- Applicants must demonstrate an ability to support diversity, equity, access, inclusion and belonging relative to their role.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree from an accredited institution in Higher Education Administration, Recreation, Sports Administration, Public Health, Exercise Science, and/or related field OR Two or more years of group exercise instruction.
- Experience in leading programming, and public speaking/training.
- Holds a current Group Exercise certification.
- Experience in direct customer service specifically in areas of membership or point-of-sale systems.
