Department of Ecoscience seeks one or more people to join the Zackenberg Research Station logistic team.

The positions are limited to a maximum duration of 6 months, starting 15 April 2024.

Job description

Zackenberg Logistics is in charge of running the research station in Northeast Greenland, i.e. operating the station, keeping guests and personnel as well as the station and its many facilities safe, and operating at full capacity when open (typically April through October). Logistic assistants report to the Station Manager (Marcin Antoni Jackowicz-Korczynski) at the Department of Ecoscience.

To support the scientific activities, the work is carried out in close collaboration with AU researchers and external partners, among others defence personnel at Daneborg, flight operators etc. Tasks include among much other:

Maintenance and Repair: Conduct regular maintenance and repairs on station infrastructure, including buildings, equipment, and utilities, to ensure smooth operations in the harsh Arctic conditions.

Power Systems Management: Oversee and maintain power generation systems, including solar panels, wind turbines, and backup generators, to ensure a stable and reliable power supply for the station.

Communication Systems: Manage and troubleshoot communication systems, including satellite communication, radio equipment, and data transmission, to support research activities and maintain connectivity.

Logistics Support: Assist with logistical tasks such as transportation, inventory management, and procurement to ensure the timely delivery of supplies and equipment to the remote station.

Safety Protocols: Enforce safety protocols and emergency procedures, conduct regular safety drills, and ensure compliance with health and safety regulations to guarantee the well-being of all station occupants.

Collaboration with Researchers: Work closely with scientists and researchers on-site, providing technical support for experiments, fieldwork, and data collection.

Your profile

Technical background with experience in electrical systems, mechanical maintenance etc., and with general technical skills documented with valid certificates.

Ability to independently work in a remote and challenging environment with minimal supervision.

Strong problem-solving skills and adaptability to changing conditions.

Excellent communication skills (also in English) and the ability to work both collaboratively in a close-knit team and with the researchers visiting the station.

Familiarity with Arctic conditions and previous experience in similar environments is a plus.

Zackenberg Research Station (

) is an ecosystem research and monitoring facility at Zackenberg (74º28’ N, 20º34’ W) in Northeast Greenland. A branch facility is situated at Daneborg, 25 km north-east of Zackenberg. Each year, Zackenberg Research Station hosts many researchers visiting from all over the world from late winter (March/April) through late fall (October/November). Research is carried out across the full ecosystem spectra from glaciers across terrestrial permafrost landscapes to the marine fjords and coastal areas. Zackenberg is owned by The Government of Greenland and is operated by the Department of Ecoscience, Aarhus University.

The Department of Ecoscience is project-based and engaged in research, talent development and consultancy covering all major biological sub-disciplines, and we conduct world-class research in the areas of ecosystem ecology including Arctic environment and ecosystems, aquatic biology and ecology, and biodiversity and conservation biology. The Department currently employs approximately 280 academic and technical staff.

The Department holds a strong position in international biodiversity, nature and environmental research and is a national leader in research-based consultancy including activities in both Denmark and Greenland. Our research focuses on how ecological framework conditions, historical conditions, natural processes and anthropogenic changes of nature and the environment affect our surrounding nature. We explore the underlying ecological and geographical mechanisms and work on understanding human impact on biodiversity and ecosystems. Particular focus is on how current climate change and other global anthropogenic environmental changes affect nature and biodiversity.

The Department of Ecoscience plays a leading role in providing advice to the Danish and Greenlandic authorities on environmental issues. The Department also leads the Greenland Ecosystem Monitoring (GEM) programme focusing on effects of climate change on the Arctic ecosystems. One of the central research sites of GEM is Zackenberg Research Station.
