Organizational Unit Overview The Division of Student Affairs actively supports the University’s missions of education, research, and service by providing comprehensive programs and services to assist each student in developing intellectually, socially, morally, and culturally. The Division anticipates students’ developmental needs throughout their collegiate experiences and promotes students development by fostering a community of learning, which encourages individual student involvement and participation. The Division of Student Affairs provides a broad range of support services, activities, and programs that seek to: Assist students in developing respect and appreciation for individual differences, interpersonal civility, and human rights. Enhance the learning environment, facilitate retention, and optimize the student experience. Accommodate the diverse needs of all students. Support a community environment that is welcoming, safe, and secure. Assist students in meeting their basic needs for housing, nutrition, and physical and emotional well-being. Provide the means for students to become active participants and leaders in their own learning. Assist students in developing logical thought processes and sound decision-making skills. Assist students in developing an appreciation of the arts. Moreover, the division seeks to contribute to the development of the whole individual by fostering in each student a deeper appreciation of the importance of life-long learning, individual responsibility, and human diversity. Through collaboration, the division provides programs and services that are grounded in theory, assessment, and sound practice.
The mission of the Department of Campus Living-Residence Life is to provide services and programs for students in the residence halls at East Carolina University. To fulfill this mission, we focus on student development, academic support, counseling, discipline and educational programming which address the needs of a broad variety of students from diverse backgrounds.
Job Duties The Residence Hall Coordinator is a twelve month, live-in position responsible for the overall administrative and programmatic aspects of a residence hall, housing 275-500 students. The Residence Hall Coordinator fosters student and community development. This position reports directly to the Director of Residence Life of Campus Living for the first year of employment.
Supervision/Training/Development
-Hire, train and supervise Resident Advisors.
-Plan and implement team-building activities to develop the staff.
-Evaluate and recognize staff performance.
-Develop hall goals and strategies to attain these.
-Assist in Campus Living staff recruitment.
-Teach an accredited Resident Advisor or First Year Student course.
-Organize and facilitate weekly hall staff meetings.
-Provide leadership training for Hall Government and other student groups.
-Advise the Hall Government executive board and body and support their activities.
-Participate in professional staff development including: bi-weekly in-services, professional organizations, coursework, and work with other departments.
-Chair or serve on a department team.
-Function as a contributing member of Coordinator team.
Administration/Facilities Management
-Coordinate administrative hall functions, including opening and closings.
-Promote safety and security through development of RA duty schedule and facility walk-throughs.
-Monitor hall budget
-Attend weekly professional staff meetings.
-Assist with facility maintenance request process.
-Prepare and submit reports, proposal, and other correspondence to Campus Living.
-Participate in Coordinator campus area duty coverage and assist with crisis intervention.
-Assume responsibility for departmental and divisional issues, programming needs and advisory duties as assigned.
-Maintain office hours for staff and student contact.Programming/Education/Development
-Utilize student development programming to facilitate individual and community growth within the living-learning environment.
-Motivate residents’ involvement with each other and hall activities.
-Implement educational diversity programming to increase awareness and promote appreciation of different cultures.
-Involve faculty in the residence halls via programming.
-Facilitate academic initiatives to assist all students, especially First Year Students, with their transition and study skills in order to support them as well as the academic mission of ECU.
Student Contact
-Provide support and counsel to individual students on an on-going basis.
-Respond to requests and inquiries from students in a timely manner.
-Promote student responsibility for behavior, which is consistent with the mission of ECU.
-Serve as hearing officer for student conduct cases and administer educational sanctions.
-Be approachable and available to interact with students on a daily basis, ie. In the dining hall, during hall tours, and at programs.
-Provide appropriate referrals to the Counseling Center and other campus/community resources.
Living Learning Communities
-Oversee a Residence Hall that houses the following Living-Learning Communities (LLC):
1. Wellness LLC
2. Honors College LLC
3. Music LLC
4. Future Pirate Nurse LLC
5. Biology LLC
6. College of Business LLC
7. College of Business Sophomore LLC
8. Chemistry and Physics LLC
9. Quest Transfer Students LLC
10. College of Education Themed-Housing LLC
11. Dance LLC
12. Career Exploration LLC
13. Athletics LLC
-Communicate weekly with each LLC on updates within the residence hall.
-Collaborate with the other Gateway RLC on programming and work with the LLC’s.
-Attend monthly Campus Living LLC meetings.
-Reach out to LLC Liaisons on attending staff meeting.
-During RA Recruitment, ask for input on who they feel would be a good fit for the RA for each LLC.
-Work with each LLC to host one program for the entire building focused on the characteristics of that LLC
-Oversee the faculty office space open for LLC faculty members
-Assist LLC RA’s with creating hall programs directed at each LLC
Other duties as assigned
Minimum Education/Experience Master’s degree in College Student Personnel, or related field, from an appropriately accredited institution
Knowledge of student development theory, counseling, diversity, communication, crisis management, and administration
Qualifying degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions and conferred by the time of hire.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation N/A
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education Housing experience
